Sean Gunn Says Goodbye to Rocket Raccoon After 12 Years in the MCU

Some superhero exits happen with a bang. This one happened with a quiet, honest confession about aching feet. Sean Gunn, the actor behind the motion-capture performance of Rocket Raccoon, has revealed his time with Marvel is officially over — and the reason is more relatable than any villain twist.

What Sean Gunn Actually Said?

In a candid podcast chat with Brandon Davis, Gunn opened up about the toll years of playing Rocket took on his body. His motion-capture work required performing in a low, crouched position for extended periods, which he said gradually wore down his ankles and feet rather than his knees, as most people assume.

Now in his 50s, Gunn shared that he considers himself finished with the role — and added that Marvel hasn’t reached out about bringing him back anyway. It wasn’t framed as bitterness, just a matter-of-fact acceptance that the physical demands of the job have caught up with him.

Rocket’s Last MCU Appearance — And What’s Next

Rocket was last seen leading a new Guardians lineup in the post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, released in 2023. Notably, that film’s closing tagline promised Star-Lord’s return — but made no mention of Rocket or the rest of the team, a detail fans are now revisiting with fresh eyes.

Adding to the uncertainty, the Guardians haven’t been confirmed for either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, leaving Rocket’s future genuinely up in the air rather than simply on pause.

Marvel Recap

Does This Mean the End for Rocket?

Not necessarily. While a full Guardians return seems unlikely with Gunn stepping back, Marvel could still bring Rocket into other cosmic corners of the MCU — a rumored Nova film, for instance — potentially through a less physically taxing performance approach. For now, though, Rocket’s story sits in limbo.
