Samsung’s 2030 Vision: Full Automation in Chip Fabs – A Pioneering Push Toward a Human-Free Future

Samsung Electronics has initiated the creation of its “Smart Sensing System,” a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing yields and revolutionizing the operation of its semiconductor fabs. The primary objective of this system is to actively monitor and analyze the production process in real-time, with its current capability to autonomously manage plasma uniformity. As per reports from DigiTimes, citing ET News, Samsung envisions achieving fully unmanned semiconductor production facilities by 2030.

More About Samsung’s 2030 Vision

The ambitious goal of Samsung involves the complete automation of its fabs, eliminating the need for human labor. To realize this vision, the company is focused on developing systems capable of handling vast amounts of data and optimizing equipment performance automatically. The Smart Sensing System stands as a critical component in this endeavor, playing a pivotal role in the transformation toward intelligent, fully automated fabs.

Samsung is making substantial investments, totaling tens of millions of won, into projects such as smart sensors, anticipating significant returns in the future. The ongoing development of smart sensors aims to measure the uniformity of plasma on wafers, a crucial parameter influencing processes like etching, deposition, and cleaning in semiconductor manufacturing. Precise measurement and management of plasma uniformity are imperative for optimal outcomes in these processes.

This technological advancement is a collaborative effort involving partnerships with various entities, including academic institutions. Notably, the compact size of these smart sensors is a key feature, allowing them to seamlessly integrate into existing fabs without requiring additional space in highly controlled cleanroom environments.

Of particular significance is the fact that these sensors are designed and manufactured in South Korea, marking a departure from the traditional reliance of South Korean chipmakers, like Samsung, on foreign tools for advanced processes. While the majority of tools are still sourced from outside the country, the development of in-house smart sensing systems represents a strategic move towards greater self-sufficiency and innovation in semiconductor manufacturing.
