Financial analyst Dan Nystedt recently tweeted that OpenAI is apparently negotiating with Samsung to bring the highly sought-after AI chatbot ChatGPT to Samsung’s mobile devices. This prospective partnership may look similar to the deal that OpenAI has with Apple, in which its AI technology is embedded in Apple’s devices. This partnership, if finalized, could put it in direct competition with Google, which provides Samsung smartphones with AI services through its Galaxy AI via its Gemini LLM.

Your Samsung Phone Might Soon Get ChatGPT Integration as Part of Galaxy AI, Says New Report
The talks with OpenAI are a surprising turn of events since Samsung has already embraced Google’s AI technology for its smartphones. As mentioned in some of the latest reviews of devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE, the Galaxy AI is currently powered by Google’s Gemini LLM. The approach would be a major move for Samsung if it did integrate ChatGPT into its smartphones, locking in the technology developed by OpenAI as a direct competitor to Google’s services on multiple devices.
Such a move would affect not only Google but also put Samsung on level footing with Apple, which has already incorporated OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its iPhone devices. Apple’s Siri, set to be activated with the release of iOS 18.2 in December, will start passing along more complicated requests to ChatGPT and making it a robust driver of requests behind the scenes on Apple’s devices. A similar pact between Samsung and OpenAI would deepen Samsung’s own AI ecosystem, and possibly give Samsung a huge advantage over the services offered by Google.
Speculation of a possible collaboration was already in the air, as the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, visited South Korea in January to meet with Samsung and SK Hynix executives. In these discussions, they aimed to build semiconductor chips to process AI. Samsung just announced its next-gen Bixby, but the addition of ChatGPT could accelerate the company’s progress on an even more capable AI assistant for its smartphones. Samsung is looking to have Galaxy AI reach 200 million devices this year, which its integration with ChatGPT could help expedite.
