Samsung Galaxy S22 will feature a 50MP primary rear camera | More details

After Samsung released three Galaxy S21 smartphone models at the beginning of 2021, a fourth model is expected later on this year, the Galaxy S21 FE(Fan Edition). Almost all the specs of that device are known to us now, we are now looking ahead to Q1 of 2022, the Samsung Galaxy S22 series is expected to release during that timeframe. In addition to a base mode, there will be an S22 Plus and S22 Ultra as well.

The S22 Series will be the next high-end smartphone series that Samsung will announce. Presumable there will be another choice for a release in January.

Samsung appears to have made multiple innovations in the new S-series lineup. Based on the information that we have in hand, graphic designer Technizo Concept, in collaboration with LetsGoDigital has designed a series of Galaxy S22 Plus renders, as well as a video, to give us a first impression of the possible design.

Though there have been several rumors with respect to the camera system of the Galaxy S22, it remains unclear for the time being as to how the camera design will actually be designed.

With the S21 Series, the South Korean manufacturer chose to optically extend the camera island to the side and top of the device. The renders designed by Technizo Concept are inspired by the S21+. The cameras have been designed slightly larger this time, and the configuration has also been changed.

It is expected that the main camera and the telephoto zoom camera will be changed. The 12MP wide-angle camera will most likely be replaced by the recently announced ISOCELL GN5.

This is a 50MP camera sensor with ultra-fast autofocus. This 1/1.57″ image sensor with  1.0μm pixels will undoubtedly deliver better image quality than the 12MP wide-angle camera found in the current Plus model.

The 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera will most likely be maintained and in addition to this Samsung is expected to equip the S22 Plus with a new telephoto camera. It is in all likelihood the same 3x optical zoom camera that can also be found in the S21 Ultra. This is a 10MP image sensor.

Although this image sensor has a lower resolution than the 64MP zoom camera used in the S21+, this lens will deliver improved zoom capabilities. The current model offers 3x Hybrid zoom and 30x digital zoom. The new image sensor will support 3x optical zoom, without any loss of image quality.

Of course, Samsung will also pay detailed attention to the video functions. Current S-series models allow you to record 4K videos @ 60fps, filming in 8K @24 fps is also possible. Features such as Director View, Single Take, and 8K Video Snap will ost likely also be found in the new model.

We can also expect to get a new function to adjust the focus in your video afterwards, as is also possible with the new iPhone 13 smartphones. Last year, Samsung replaced the Live Focus video feature with Portrait Mode.

However, this function cannot be used afterwards, only while recording.

Olympus denies collaboration rumors with Samsung:

Earlier this year, there were speculations that Samsung has entered into a partnership with Olympus and we may see the first results of this with the Galaxy S22.

It sounded pretty credible, partly because several smartphone manufacturers have now begun a partnership with a leading camera brand. For instance OnePlus and Hasselblad.

Olympus however denied these rumors. The confusion may have arisen due to the Exynos 2200 chip that is being designed by Samsung has been codenamed ‘Olympus’.

Display and Design:

Coming to the screen, the Plus models within the Galaxy S Series are traditionally equipped with a larger display than the base models, both the S20 and S21+ were equipped with a 6.7″ Dynamic AMOLED display. The display resolution has been reduced this year, from QHD+ to Full HD+ resolution.

The Galaxy S22+ will again have a Full AMOLED screen with 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. There is still some uncertainty when it comes to the size, according to some rumors, the difference in display size between the base model and the Plus model will be reduced.

Regarding the materials we can expect to see, the S21 has a plastic+ glass back panel, while the Plus model has only a glass back. The plastic and glass combination is known as glasstic, it is plastic that resembles glass, it is cheaper to produce but it is also stronger and tougher than glass.

If you are wondering a smartphone that retails for more than EUR 1000 or 86,250 INR should have a plastic back, in reality the material looks and feels more premium than what you would expect it to be. It is less fingerprint sensitive as well.

Prior to the S21 being equipped with a glasstic back panel, Samsung already applied the same type of material to the Note 20 and S20 FE. In the coming year, Samsung seems to want to continue this further, by providing not only the base model, but also the Galaxy S22+ with a glasstic housing and a metal frame.

The possible advantage of this is that the selling price is also adjusted downwards. The S21 Plus was put on the market for EUR 200 or 17,254 INR more than the base model, it is a pretty big chunk considering the minute differences between the two models.

No Under-display camera for S-Sseries in 2022:

The Galaxy S22 Series is likely to feature an Infinity-O display with a 10MP punch-hole camera setup. The image sensor has made an appearance in multiple S-series models, such as the Galaxy S10, S20, and the S21.

You would expect that the front camera setup would undergo a serious update after three years, still it seems that Samsung is hell bent on using the same image sensor for the S22 and S22 Plus. The 40MP selfie camera will be reserved only for the Ultra model.

Many S-series users will not immediately experience this as a major disadvantage, since the main camera is used significantly more than the selfie camera by most. And it is the main camera that will get a significant upgrade- unlike this year, in addition, you will still be able to take reasonable self-portraits with the 10MP selfie camera.

Expected Chipset:

The Samsung Galaxy S22 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 895/898 and the Samsung Exynos 2200.

The expectations are high on the Exynos chipset, as Samsung will use an AMD Mobile Radeon GPU with RDNA2 technology for the first time, this chip will also support ray tracing and shading variable rate. Technologies that are already being used in gaming PCs and consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox X series.

Android 12 paired with One UI 4:

Last week, Samsung gave us a first preview of the new One UI 4 user interface that is based on Android 12. The current S series models will probably be given an update to Google’s new OS by end of 2021.

The Galaxy S22 Series will be the first Samsung devices to run on Android 12 out-of-the-box, in combination with the One UI 4 shell. The interface is characterized by numerous new personalization options.

The widgets also get a new design and a series of new emojis are added, finally, attention has also been paid to the privacy and security features. For example, it should be easier to see and determine which apps have access to the camera and/or microphone.

According to Samsung’s current update policy, high-end phoned receive 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of Security updates. That means the Galaxy S22 Plus users can expect an update to Andorid 13, 14 and finally to Android 15, we will be in 2024 by then.

The Galaxy S22 Plus may also be equipped with Ultra Wide Band technology, so you can unlock your car via your smartphone. This smartphone will also be compatible with the Galaxy SmartTag+ Bluetooth tracker.

Galaxy S22 Plus gets a smaller battery:

The Galaxy S21+ had a 4,800mAh battery, much better than the 4,000mAh battery on the Galaxy S21.

Samsung unfortunately has decided to go with a smaller battery next year, certification document show that the Galaxy S22+ has a 4,500mAh battery.

This could mean several things, if Samsung indeed decided to use a smaller screen such as a 6.55″ display, the screen will require lesser energy, so that the total battery life will still be the same. In addition, it is quite possible that the new chip in combination with smart algorithms will ensure optimized energy consumption, that will benefit the overall battery life.

There are uncertainties coming to the fast charging options, the entire S21 Series supports only 25W wired and 15W wireless charging. Since, the beginning of the year there have been several indications that Samsung has a 65W charger in the works. Hopefully, we get to see this in the S22 lineup.

It is too early to presume this, Ice Universe, a reliable tipster announced via Twitter that none of the S-series models will support 65W fast charging support.

Samsug will not include a charger or earbuds in the sales packaging of its high-end phones. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case next year either. So if you want to use the faster charging options, you will have to invest in a new charger.

Availability and pricing:

The Galaxy S22 Series will begin being mass produced in November, this points out towards a January 2022 launch.

The S22 Series may be announced mid-January and then go on sale in late January and early February. Samsung will undoubtedly host another Galaxy unpacked event to unveil these new models.

Samsung has lowered the prices of the S-Series devices this year. The prices are determined as follows:

  • Samsung Galaxy S21-8GB+128GB EUR 850 or 73,343 INR
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus-12GB+128GB EUR 1,050 or 90,600 INR
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra-12GB+128GB EUR 1,250 or 1,07,845 INR

If Samsung chooses to provide the Plus model with a glasstic back panel and possibly a slightly smaller display in the coming year, then it is likely that the price will in any case not be higher than this year. Stay tuned as we will keep you updated till the launch of the S22 Series!
