Sam and Bucky’s Friendship Is Still Broken Ahead of Avengers: Doomsday

Even in a movie theater seat, some feuds are impossible to hide. A new Avengers: Doomsday promo, meant simply to remind audiences to silence their phones, has accidentally revealed just how strained things still are between Captain America and Bucky Barnes heading into the film.

What the Promo Actually Shows?

The clip features the Doomsday cast sitting together in a theater, reacting to the movie playing in front of them. While most characters look like they’re having a blast, Bucky Barnes seems noticeably disengaged, sitting just one seat away from his former best friend, Sam Wilson. Red Guardian sits between them, seemingly unaware of the tension radiating on both sides.

Why Sam and Bucky Are at Odds?

The root of their conflict traces back to the Avengers name itself. After Captain America: Brave New World, Sam expressed his intent to reform the Avengers — only for Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s New Avengers to beat him to it in Thunderbolts*. Making matters worse, Bucky later revealed a tense conversation with Sam, and it came out that the new Captain America is pursuing legal action over rights to the Avengers name.

Could Steve Rogers Fix This?

Marketing for Doomsday has deliberately kept Sam and Bucky apart so far, but one trailer moment hints at a possible reunion — and it likely involves Steve Rogers stepping back into the picture. Given his history with both men, Steve seems like the only person capable of mediating the standoff, though he’s unlikely to simply pick a side. Instead, expect him to weigh both teams’ actions fairly, much like he’s done throughout the franchise.

Whether that means one unified Avengers team or two groups operating side by side remains to be seen, but tension this deep won’t resolve itself without some kind of intervention.
