The Winning Formula Returns

In a recent Happy Sad Confused podcast interview, Coogler confirmed fans’ biggest hope: “We intend on having both monsters of the week and also the overarching conspiracy”—the perfect balance that made the original series a cultural phenomenon.

The original X-Files masterfully alternated between standalone episodes featuring bizarre creatures and unexplained phenomena, and serialized “mythology” episodes exploring government conspiracies and alien cover-ups. This structure allowed casual viewers to jump in anytime while rewarding devoted fans who followed the deeper mystery.

A Personal Passion Project

For Coogler, this isn’t just another directing gig—it’s deeply personal. The filmmaker revealed he watched the show with his mother, calling it “one of the most beautiful American television shows ever made”. His genuine connection to the material suggests this reboot will capture the spirit that made X-Files appointment television.

The director has already consulted with Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, who cut his teeth writing for the original series, seeking advice on crafting compelling television. This attention to legacy and craft is exactly what longtime fans hope to see.

Fresh Faces, Familiar Dynamics

While Coogler remains tight-lipped about whether original stars Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully) and David Duchovny (Fox Mulder) will appear, he’s praised both actors and confirmed conversations with Anderson about potential involvement.

Reports suggest Danielle Deadwyler may lead the new series, aligning with original creator Chris Carter’s vision for a more diverse cast. The reboot will maintain the classic skeptic-and-believer partnership that influenced countless shows from True Detective to modern crime dramas.

Why This Matters for TV Fans

The X-Files wasn’t just a show—it shaped how we tell stories on television. Its hybrid format influenced modern prestige TV, proving audiences could handle both episodic entertainment and complex serialized narratives. With streaming platforms now favoring binge-worthy mysteries, Coogler’s approach feels perfectly timed.

The series also popularized the phrase “The truth is out there,” becoming cultural shorthand for healthy skepticism and curiosity. In an era of misinformation and conspiracy theories, revisiting these themes through contemporary storytelling could prove remarkably relevant.

All 11 seasons of the original series will stream free on Pluto TV starting January 1, 2026—perfect timing for new viewers to catch up before Coogler’s vision arrives.
