Roblox Corporation (NYSE: RBLX) has announced the global introduction of Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts, age-differentiated experiences designed for users under 16. These new account types offer protection mechanisms that adapt as children mature, alongside expanded tools for parental oversight. The rollout includes immediate availability in India.

The global launch follows a limited market introduction last month in Australia, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. The new account framework aims to align game access, chat functionalities, and parental controls with a user’s age, providing increased transparency and flexibility for parents managing their child’s engagement on the Roblox platform.

Users are automatically assigned to an appropriate account experience based on Roblox’s internal age-check systems. This initiative integrates existing age verification processes, age-based account settings, content ratings, continuous moderation, and enhanced parental controls into a cohesive system. At launch, users under 16 who have completed age verification will retain access to the majority of popular games, while the experience for verified users aged 16 and older remains unchanged.

Matt Kaufman, Chief Safety Officer at Roblox, stated, “Children’s needs change significantly as they grow, and online experiences should adapt alongside them. With Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, we’re creating age-based protections designed to support younger users at different stages, while giving parents tools to personalize the experience for their family.”

Age-Based Account Tiers

The new system categorizes users into distinct tiers:

* **Roblox Kids Accounts (Ages 5–8):** This tier implements the platform’s most stringent default protections. Users can access a curated catalog of games labeled “Minimal” or “Mild” in content maturity, which undergo a continuous selection process by Roblox. Chat functionality is disabled by default for these accounts.
* **Roblox Select Accounts (Ages 9–15):** Users in this tier can access games rated up to “Moderate,” also subject to Roblox’s selection process. Chat settings vary by age and geographical region, with additional safeguards in place for all users under the age of 16.

For both Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts, Roblox applies additional review standards to available games. These standards include developer verification, real-time evaluation, and enhanced content scrutiny. By default, games featuring sensitive topics, open social hangouts, or free-form drawing tools are excluded from the Roblox Kids and Roblox Select catalogs.

The age-based account system is designed for automatic progression, with users transitioning from Roblox Kids to Roblox Select at age nine, and subsequently from Roblox Select to standard Roblox accounts upon reaching age 16.

Enhanced Parental Oversight

Roblox is also expanding its suite of parental controls. Parents who link their accounts to their children’s profiles already have access to features providing visibility into gameplay activity and friend lists. These tools also allow management of content ratings, communication settings, screen time limits, and spending caps.

With the latest rollout, certain controls, such as granular game blocking and direct chat management, will remain active until the child turns 16. A new game approval feature has also been introduced, enabling parents to grant access to specific games that fall outside their child’s default account settings.

Vineeta Garg, IT Head at SRDAV Public School and a member of Roblox’s Global Parent Council, commented on the development: “As an educator and parent advocate, I welcome Roblox’s introduction of age-based accounts that recognize children’s evolving online needs. This launch is a significant step toward creating safer, more age-appropriate digital experiences while giving parents greater visibility and control. I am particularly encouraged by the focus on age-based protections, expanded parental controls, and thoughtful safeguards around communication and content access.”

Broader Safety Initiatives

This rollout integrates with Roblox’s wider efforts to foster age-appropriate environments for younger users. The platform previously became the first major online gaming entity to mandate facial age checks for accessing chat features. Once the full rollout is complete, users who have not undergone age verification will be unable to access standard Roblox accounts or utilize chat features, regardless of their declared age.

Roblox (https://www.roblox.com/) also maintains protections designed to prevent the sharing of external links, images, and videos within its chat functionalities. While social media links have always been prohibited in chat, the company will further restrict users younger than 16 from sharing or viewing them on user profiles, game detail pages, community pages, or the Creator Hub later this month. Later this year, Roblox plans to adopt the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) framework, a globally recognized standard for assigning content ratings to digital games and applications. These collective updates underscore Roblox’s ongoing commitment to delivering age-based protections that evolve with users, enhance parental transparency and control, and support secure, positive online interactions.
