If your child is one of the hundreds of millions of young players on Roblox, this is genuinely big news. The platform’s founder and CEO David Baszucki has officially announced two brand-new age-based account types — Roblox Kids and Roblox Select — rolling out in early June 2026. This is the most significant child safety overhaul the platform has ever undertaken, and it matters for every parent, guardian, and young player out there.
Roblox’s New Account System
| Account Type | Age Range | Content Access | Communication | Auto-Transition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roblox Kids | 5 – 8 years | Minimal & Mild rated games only | Disabled by default | Moves to Select at age 9 |
| Roblox Select | 9 – 15 years | Up to Moderate rated games | Default settings for age group | Moves to Standard at age 16 |
| Standard Roblox | 16 and above | Full platform access | Standard settings | — |
Transitions happen automatically as a child ages — no action required from parents. Users who haven’t completed an age-check yet will be limited to Minimal or Mild games with all communication disabled until they do.

What Changes for Kids Aged 5–8 (Roblox Kids)?
Roblox Kids is the most restricted tier, built specifically for the youngest players on the platform. All communication is switched off by default — no chat, no messaging. The game library is filtered to only include content rated Minimal or Mild that has also passed a dedicated three-step selection process. The app itself will even look different, with a distinct background colour to signal the account type clearly.
It’s a thoughtful design choice. Young children don’t need access to open chat features — they need safe, fun games.

What Changes for Ages 9–15 (Roblox Select)
Roblox Select offers a broader but still curated experience. Content access expands to include games rated up to Moderate — again, only those that have cleared the continuous evaluation process. Default communication settings remain aligned with what’s already in place for this age group. Like Kids accounts, Select accounts carry a distinct visual treatment across the app.
The Three-Step Game Evaluation Process
What makes this update genuinely robust is the ongoing selection process for all games available to users under 16. It’s not a one-time review — it’s a continuous system built on three pillars:
- Developer verification — Creators must complete ID verification, enable two-step verification, and hold an active Roblox Plus subscription before their games can reach younger users.
- Real-time evaluation — Roblox monitors how players aged 16 and above interact with new games and tracks user reports to assess suitability for younger audiences.
- Content maturity rating — Each game receives a label: Minimal, Mild, or Moderate. By default, social hangouts, free-form drawing games, and content flagged for sensitive issues are excluded from both Kids and Select accounts.
Later in 2026, Roblox will begin transitioning to the internationally recognised IARC ratings framework — the same system behind ESRB ratings in the US and PEGI ratings across Europe and the UK.

Expanded Parental Controls
Parents aren’t left out of this. The update brings three key parental control improvements:
- Granular game blocking — Parents can block specific individual games for children up to age 15.
- Chat management — Direct chat settings remain manageable by parents through age 15.
- New game approval — Parents can now individually approve specific games that fall outside their child’s default account type — giving families more flexibility, not less.
All these tools continue to show parents which games their child is playing and who their friends are. That level of transparency is exactly what responsible platforms should be offering.
ConnectSafely CEO Larry Magid praised the move: “By combining age assurance, stronger creator accountability, and parental controls, Roblox is helping set a higher standard for how platforms can better protect younger users while preserving positive online experiences.”
