Real Madrid Clinch FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2024 with Dominant Win Over Pachuca

Real Madrid asserted their dominance on the global stage by defeating Pachuca 3-0 in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2024 final at Lusail Stadium. The victory, marked by goals from Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo, and Vinicius Jr, capped off an extraordinary year for Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

Exactly two years after his World Cup heroics at the same venue, Mbappe once again showcased his brilliance, while Vinicius Jr added another accolade to his remarkable week. The Spanish giants delivered a performance that highlighted their tactical superiority and clinical finishing.

Early Threats and Madrid’s Breakthrough

The Mexican side Pachuca started brightly, with Luis Rodriguez unleashing a powerful drive early on, forcing Thibaut Courtois into an excellent save. However, Madrid gradually gained control.

The breakthrough came in the 37th minute when Jude Bellingham set up Vinicius Jr with an exquisite pass. Displaying dazzling footwork, Vinicius rounded Pachuca’s goalkeeper Carlos Moreno and squared the ball for Mbappe, who calmly slotted it into the net. The Frenchman’s composure and precision highlighted why he remains one of the world’s elite players.

Madrid almost doubled their lead before halftime, with Mbappe’s 20-yard attempt narrowly missing the target, leaving Pachuca trailing but still hopeful.

Rodrygo’s Masterpiece

Shortly after the restart, Rodrygo extended Madrid’s lead. Receiving the ball on the edge of the box, the forward curled a magnificent shot past Moreno. A brief VAR check confirmed that Bellingham, positioned in an offside area, was not interfering with play. The goal stood, igniting celebrations among the Madrid faithful.

Despite the deficit, Pachuca remained resilient. Captain Salomon Rondon’s free-kick was superbly saved by Courtois, and his header shortly after went inches over the bar. These near misses reflected Pachuca’s fighting spirit, even as Madrid maintained their composure.

Vinicius Seals the Victory

In the 84th minute, Vinicius Jr put the result beyond doubt. Awarded a penalty, the Brazilian forward confidently converted, capping a stellar individual performance. Fresh off being named The Best FIFA Men’s Player, Vinicius proved why he’s at the pinnacle of world football.

Post-Match Reactions

Reflecting on the triumph, Carlo Ancelotti expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I am very happy, it is natural. We did the things we prepared and this made the difference. Everyone played a good match, I am very happy. It was a match that in the middle of the season could have caused problems and instead we deservedly won it.”

Vinicius Jr, glowing from his double success, shared, “These two days have been incredible for me. Yesterday, I received the award for best player in the world – and today I came here and won and was named the best player of the match.”

Rodrygo also praised his teammate, saying, “He is an example of resilience, for everything he went through, and now he has become the best player in the world. I’m always happy for my friend’s achievements, especially after seeing his work every day.”

Guillermo Almada, Pachuca’s coach, commended his team’s effort despite the loss. “We had our chances, but their efficiency was decisive. Many young players gained their first international experience throughout the tournament. It was an amazing experience. Of course, we wanted to win the final, but the effort was outstanding,” he remarked.

Recognizing Excellence

The tournament’s individual accolades further emphasized Madrid’s dominance. Vinicius Jr was awarded the Aramco Player of the Tournament and the adidas Golden Ball, while Federico Valverde and Elias Montiel secured the Silver and Bronze Balls, respectively.
