Real Madrid Issue Official Denial Over Enzo Fernández Transfer Speculation

Real Madrid have moved to shut down days of transfer talk by releasing an official club statement denying any interest whatsoever in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández. The Spanish giants insisted they have made no effort, direct or indirect, to sign the Argentine, and stated they have no intention of pursuing such a deal either.

The statement, published on the club’s official website, was notably direct in tone. Real Madrid stressed they hold great respect for Fernández as a player and for Chelsea as an institution, but felt compelled to categorically reject speculation they described as unfounded and detached from reality.

Why Madrid Felt Forced to Respond

Clubs rarely comment publicly on transfer gossip, so the decision to issue a formal denial signals how much noise had built up around the story. The speculation intensified after comments from Fernández’s agent, Javier Pastore, who had suggested in media interviews that both the player and Real Madrid were exploring a possible move, and that Fernández had admiration for the club.

Madrid’s statement pushed back firmly on that framing. The club explained it was acting out of respect for Chelsea and out of a broader principle of institutional loyalty, and said it regretted that inaccurate information kept circulating despite the facts, arguing it only created confusion for supporters and caused unnecessary difficulty for the parties involved.

What’s Actually Going On Behind the Scenes

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, there have been zero contacts between the two clubs so far, and no formal talks have begun. Romano reported that Madrid view Fernández as just one of five possible midfield targets rather than a priority signing.

Money appears to be a key factor in Madrid’s caution. Chelsea are said to value their midfielder at around £120m, a fee Real Madrid reportedly consider too steep to commit to for a single position this summer, especially with the club already working through a broader squad rebuild under new manager Jose Mourinho.

Fernández’s own situation, meanwhile, remains unresolved. Pastore has confirmed the player is open to exploring a move away from Stamford Bridge, though nothing is close to being finalized at any club. For now, the 25-year-old remains focused on Argentina’s World Cup campaign, with sources indicating Chelsea currently expect him to return for pre-season as normal once his involvement at the tournament ends.

Fernández was previously dropped for two matches last season after revealing in a March interview that he holds strong admiration for Real Madrid, comments that first sparked talk of a potential switch to the Bernabeu.

Madrid’s Summer Rebuild Continues Elsewhere

Even as they distance themselves from Fernández, Real Madrid remain active in the transfer market this summer as they overhaul the squad following two trophyless seasons. The club have already added Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konaté and Bernardo Silva, with Denzel Dumfries also expected to complete a move.

Madrid also missed out on a reported €150m move for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez, and have been linked with Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise as they continue searching for further attacking and midfield reinforcements.

With Real Madrid publicly stepping back from the race, other suitors are reportedly circling. Arsenal and Manchester City have both been linked with moves for Fernández, positioning themselves as potential destinations should the midfielder push for an exit from Chelsea this summer.

What Happens Next

For now, the situation remains fluid. Chelsea have shown no public indication they intend to sell, and Fernández remains contracted at Stamford Bridge until 2032. But with his camp openly discussing a possible departure and rival Premier League clubs monitoring the situation, the coming weeks could bring further developments — even if Real Madrid have made clear, at least officially, that they won’t be the ones driving them.
