Is Nolan Cahill Dead? Reacher Season 4 Episode 3 Ending Explained

Reacher Season 4 closes out its three-episode premiere event with a shocking rooftop moment that changes everything about the Anna Merrick case.

Episode 3, titled “One Small Step,” opens with Reacher, Tamara, and Jacob regrouping at Russell’s DC hideout after a violent break-in. Reacher’s growing suspicion of Nolan Cahill — Congressman John Sampson’s chief of staff and the previously unidentified fourth witness on the subway the night Anna Merrick died — becomes impossible to ignore as the episode unfolds.

What Happens to Nolan Cahill?

Reacher and Sampson track Cahill down at a rooftop bar, where he calmly sets down his drink and tells them “things always have a way of coming to light” before turning to Sampson and telling him he would have made a good president. He then walks off the roof, leaving Reacher with another body and no real answers.

The reveal ties directly back to the season’s central mystery. Investigator Plum discovers that Cahill was actually Sampson’s commanding officer during his military service in Indonesia, making Cahill’s presence on the subway far from coincidental. FilmGordon

The Bigger Picture

Elsewhere in the episode, Lila finally comes clean to Reacher, admitting that Sampson isn’t her father and that she doesn’t have leukemia — the entire story she’d told him was fabricated. Her real motive is that she’s a journalist investigating the US government’s ties to General Putra, with Sampson later admitting he did work with Putra during his time in the military.

Episode 3 Quick Facts

Season 4 adapts Lee Child’s novel Gone Tomorrow, pulling Reacher into a conspiracy involving people at the highest levels of power. The character has anchored one of streaming’s most consistent action franchises — you can read more about the source novels on Wikipedia’s Jack Reacher page. FandomWire
