Ranbir Kapoor Says Ramayana Could Fill 10 Movies — Here’s Why They Stopped At Two

At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Ranbir Kapoor admitted that to properly tell Ramayana, filmmakers would probably need a 10-part movie, calling the conciseness required to fit it into two parts very hard, especially for the scriptwriters. Kapoor emphasized that closeness to the simple soul of the story is what allows it to reach a larger audience, rather than any modern creative liberties.

Why Two Parts, Not Three

Interestingly, the two-part structure wasn’t the original plan. Director Nitesh Tiwari revealed that the makers had originally planned Ramayana as a trilogy before eventually settling on a two-part format, explaining that the epic’s emotional depth made it impossible to fit into a single film, while stretching it across three installments created its own set of challenges.

A Massive Undertaking

The scale of the production reflects just how seriously the team is treating the source material. Both parts of Ramayana will have a runtime of over 6 hours combined, with Ranbir confirming that shooting for Part 2, at least for his own scenes, is already 50% complete and expected to wrap before Part 1 even releases.

Kapoor also confirmed he’s playing a dual role in the film, portraying both Lord Rama and Lord Parashurama — a detail that adds even more weight to his performance across the two-part saga.

Technology, Not A Rewrite

According to Kapoor, what makes this adaptation feel fresh isn’t a modernized story, but the technology available to tell it. He noted that the story has already been told across mediums like musicals, radio, and theater over the centuries, and what’s different now is simply the level of technology filmmakers have access to today. Producer Namit Malhotra echoed that sentiment, calling the film a “modern classic” and arguing that nobody should change something that isn’t broken.

The Cast Bringing It To Life

Alongside Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, the film stars Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Ravi Dubey as Lakshman. The music brings together AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer, giving the project a genuinely global creative footprint behind one of Hindu mythology’s most revered texts, the Ramayana.
