Raja Shivaji: How Riteish Deshmukh Is Turning Marathi Cinema’s Biggest Dream Into a Pan-India Reality

There’s something deeply personal about Raja Shivaji for Riteish Deshmukh — and you can feel it. This isn’t just another big-budget historical. It’s a passion project nearly 25 years in the making, from a man who quietly built an unbeaten record in Marathi cinema and now wants to show the rest of India what Maharashtra has to say.

Riteish Deshmukh: Marathi Cinema’s Most Consistent Champion

Most Bollywood actors who dabble in regional cinema treat it as a side hustle. Riteish never did. Since stepping into Marathi films, he hasn’t delivered a single flop — a record that speaks for itself. His production banner has backed National Award-winning films like Balak Palak and Yellow, alongside crowd-pullers like Mauli, Lai Bhari, and the runaway blockbuster Ved.

What makes this run remarkable isn’t just the box office numbers — it’s the range. Riteish has shown he can back meaningful cinema and mass entertainers with equal conviction.

Raja Shivaji: Everything We Know So Far

Raja Shivaji is based on the legendary life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj — the 17th-century Maratha warrior king whose legacy continues to inspire millions across India. The film has been in the making as Riteish’s dream project, and for the first time, he steps behind the camera as director while also playing the lead.

The scale is genuinely staggering. Here’s a quick look at the ensemble:

The music is composed by Ajay-Atul, the duo behind some of Maharashtra’s most beloved soundtracks — and early reports suggest the songs are already going viral. The teaser, released a few weeks ago, was received warmly by audiences across language barriers.

Raja Shivaji is presented by Jio Studios and produced by Jyoti Deshpande and Genelia Deshmukh under Mumbai Film Company. It releases worldwide on May 1, 2026, in both Marathi and Hindi.

Why This Film Could Be a Turning Point for Indian Cinema?

The pan-India wave started with the South — Baahubali, RRR, KGF, Pushpa. Each of those films made the rest of India sit up and say: regional cinema isn’t regional anymore. Raja Shivaji is making the same argument for Maharashtra.

What’s different here is that this film isn’t just chasing scale for spectacle’s sake. Riteish has spent years earning audience trust in Marathi cinema — and now he’s using that goodwill to tell a story that genuinely matters to millions of people. That combination of credibility and ambition is rare, and it’s exactly what pan-India films need to break through.
