Raja Shivaji Box Office: Riteish Deshmukh’s Historical Epic Crosses ₹85 Crore — On Course to Make Marathi Cinema History with ₹100 Crore Milestone

Something historic is happening at the Indian box office — and it’s wearing a Marathi flag. Raja Shivaji, starring Riteish Deshmukh in the title role of the legendary Maratha warrior king, has crossed ₹85.50 crore gross and is now firmly on track to become the first-ever Marathi film to cross ₹100 crore at the Indian box office. That is not just a number — that is a milestone for an entire film industry.

Why the ₹100 Crore Mark Would Be Historic

Currently standing at ₹85.50 crore, the historical epic saga is set to take its total to the ₹90 crore mark by end of this week, and is now locked to cross the ₹100 crore mark in its full run. It will be the first time for Marathi cinema — previously, Sairat and Baipan Bhari Deva came so close to this milestone but ended their run around the ₹90 crore mark.

That context makes every rupee Raja Shivaji earns feel like a victory lap for Marathi cinema as a whole.

Notably, those two earlier films had just the Marathi version with almost all of their business coming from Maharashtra, while Raja Shivaji has a Hindi-dubbed version and a good amount of business outside Maharashtra — which has meaningfully expanded its footprint.

Could It Have Gone Higher?

There is a sense that the film could have aimed even higher. The target was films like Tanhaji and Chhaava, which were also based on figures from the Maratha Empire. Tanhaji grossed around ₹175 crore in Maharashtra state back in 2020 (adjusted to over ₹250 crore today), while Chhaava went on to collect over ₹300 crore. Raja Shivaji is centred on the very founder and leader of that empire, long anticipated and made in the empire’s own language — while the film has done well, it is no longer in the running to reach those heights. Still, crossing ₹100 crore as a Marathi-language film — even with a Hindi version — is a feat that will be remembered. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the 17th-century Maratha warrior king who built a vast empire, remains one of India’s most revered historical figures, making this film’s subject matter inherently powerful and emotionally resonant for audiences across generations.
