Every career has its “what if” moment — that one decision that, in hindsight, could have rewritten everything. For Rahul Roy, the heartthrob who ruled Bollywood after Aashiqui’s massive success, that moment has a name: Darr. Decades later, he still calls it his biggest regret.

From Overnight Stardom To An Overflowing Schedule

Rahul Roy‘s rise to fame was nothing short of meteoric. After Aashiqui became a massive musical hit in 1990, he found himself flooded with offers — by his own account, close to 49 films came his way almost overnight, leaving him unsure which projects to prioritize. During this whirlwind period of stardom, Yash Chopra personally called him in for a narration.

The film Chopra was casting for was Darr — and the character of Rahul, later immortalized by Shah Rukh Khan, was reportedly written with Roy in mind from the very beginning.

Why He Said No

Roy has explained that the decision wasn’t about doubting the project. Simply put, he was juggling too many commitments at once — several of his signed films were already on the floors, and multiple filmmakers were competing for his dates. Narration or not, there wasn’t room left on his calendar for another major commitment, and Darr slipped through the cracks.

A Role That Changed Everything — For Someone Else

History, of course, took a very different turn. Darr went on to become one of 1993’s biggest hits, and Shah Rukh Khan’s portrayal of the obsessive, unsettling lover Rahul Mehra became one of the most iconic performances of his career — arguably the role that set the stage for his transformation into Bollywood’s biggest star. Interestingly, Roy wasn’t the only actor linked to the part before SRK; Aamir Khan was also considered but stepped away over unmet conditions around a joint narration.

Living With The “Biggest Regret”

Years later, appearing on The Kapil Sharma Show alongside his Aashiqui co-stars Anu Aggarwal and Deepak Tijori, Roy opened up candidly about the missed opportunity, calling it the one decision he still can’t fully shake off. He’s been refreshingly honest about it ever since — acknowledging that while the “what if” lingers, it’s a chapter of his career he has learned to accept and move past.

A Legacy Beyond One Missed Role

Despite the regret, Rahul Roy’s own career carved out a lasting place in Bollywood history. From his breakout in Aashiqui to acclaimed performances in films like Junoon, he remained a recognizable face through the 1990s. He continued acting well into recent years, including projects like Cabaret and Walk.

Sometimes the roles we don’t take say just as much about a career as the ones we do — and for Rahul Roy, Darr remains the one that got away.
