PS6 and a Next-Gen PSP: Everything We Know About Sony’s Rumoured Double Launch Plan

For gamers who’ve watched Nintendo and Microsoft push hard into the handheld space, Sony’s next move might be the most interesting yet. Reports increasingly point toward a coordinated 2027 launch for both the PlayStation 6 and a genuine successor to the PSP — not a streaming gimmick, but a fully native, standalone handheld.

Two Devices, One Ecosystem

Sony is reportedly planning to simultaneously launch home and portable versions of the PlayStation 6 with full backward compatibility by late 2027, marking the Japanese manufacturer’s official return to the dedicated handheld gaming market after more than a decade.

Why the Handheld Matters

Unlike the PlayStation Portal, this new device is said to run PS5 and even PS6 titles natively without requiring any streaming, putting it in direct competition with the Nintendo Switch 2, Steam Deck and Xbox’s own handheld efforts. Reports suggest PlayStation Studios were recently briefed internally on the device, reinforcing that it is genuinely in development rather than pure speculation.

A Timeline Still Not Fully Locked

Analysts have flagged that rising RAM prices could push Sony’s release timeline back further than expected, with one MST International analyst warning in early 2026 that the PS6 is “likely to be delayed longer than many expected.” Despite that uncertainty, insider reports from sources like KeplerL2 maintain 2027 remains the plan “unless any unexpected delays happen.”
