Pratik Gandhi and Patralekha Shine as Anti-Caste Pioneers in ‘Phule’ Trailer

The much-anticipated trailer of Phule was released on Monday, offering a gripping look into the lives of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule—two of India’s most influential social reformers. Starring Pratik Gandhi as Jyotirao Phule and Patralekha as Savitribai Phule, the film promises to shed light on their relentless fight against caste-based discrimination and gender inequality.

Directed by Ananth Mahadevan, Phule aims to bring an often-overlooked chapter of Indian history to the forefront. The biographical drama, produced by Dancing Shiva Films and Kingsmen Productions, is set for a theatrical release on April 11, with Zee Studios distributing the film.

A Fight Against Oppression and Inequality

The trailer delves into the hardships faced by the Phules as they challenged the deeply patriarchal and casteist norms of 19th-century Maharashtra. Their pioneering work in promoting women’s education, especially for widows and Dalit girls, placed them at odds with the rigid social structure of the time. The film captures their courage as they faced hostility while striving to create a more just and equitable society.

Pratik Gandhi, portraying Jyotirao Phule, expressed his gratitude for being part of such a significant story. “I am fortunate that I got to live the life of the legendary Mahatma, on screen. I could feel the immense struggle and opposition that he endured as he, along with his wife, dismantled an age-old societal system designed to oppress those at the lowest rungs of the social hierarchy,” he shared.

The trailer powerfully showcases the resistance the couple encountered—from public outrage to institutional barriers—highlighting their unwavering determination to uplift the marginalized and ensure access to education for all.

A Story That Demands to Be Told

Patralekha, playing Savitribai Phule, expressed her admiration for the visionary reformer, emphasizing the crucial role she played in advancing education for girls. “Alongside Jyotirao Phule, Savitribai laid the very foundation for modern education and social equality in India. She brought in a significant change for the girl child in our country, but her story is not told enough. I am glad Anant sir decided to make a film on their life and I got to play her,” she stated.

Savitribai Phule’s contributions to women’s rights and education remain monumental, yet often underrepresented in mainstream discourse. The film seeks to correct this historical oversight by placing her legacy at the heart of the narrative.

A Visionary Director’s Perspective

Ananth Mahadevan, known for his nuanced storytelling, has taken on the challenge of bringing this compelling story to the big screen. Speaking about the importance of revisiting such narratives, he said, “These stories that are lost somewhere in history, need to be told to the young generation. Imagine two people decided to change the world for the better, in spite of the immense opposition that they had to face. Their story is truly inspiring.”

His approach to the film ensures that Phule is not just a historical retelling but an emotionally charged experience that resonates with contemporary audiences.

A Powerful Tale of Social Reform Unveiled

With an evocative storyline, stirring performances, and a strong social message, Phule is poised to be a landmark film that celebrates the resilience and vision of two extraordinary reformers. The trailer has already sparked discussions about caste, gender, and education, making it one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

As Phule gears up for its theatrical debut on April 11, audiences can expect an unforgettable journey into the lives of two revolutionaries who changed India’s social fabric forever.
