Netflix India has unveiled the first look of “Hum Hindustani,” a period drama starring Saif Ali Khan and Pratik Gandhi about India’s first democratic election. Announced on February 3, 2026, the teaser chronicles the 1951-52 general election and the officials who executed the world’s largest election amid illiteracy and political resistance. Saif plays an official advocating for universal adult suffrage, while Pratik portrays a police officer ensuring the election proceeds peacefully. Written and directed by Rahul Dholakia, the series explores how a nascent democracy achieved this landmark moment. Produced by Emmay Entertainment, the drama promises cinematic scale and historical depth.

Plot and Historical Context

The series tells the story of how the Election Commission of India devised systems from scratch to conduct the first general election. With a largely illiterate electorate, officials had to introduce electoral symbols, transport ballot boxes across vast and inaccessible terrain, and convince citizens that their vote mattered.

The logline emphasizes the collective effort: “In newly independent India, a team of officials battles chaos, resistance, and impossible odds to deliver the nation’s very first democratic election—inspired by true events.”

Production and Creative Team

Director Rahul Dholakia, known for films like Parzania and Raees, brings his storytelling sensibility to this historical narrative. His vision emphasizes telling the story “through the eyes of those on the ground” rather than focusing on prominent political leaders.

The production faced challenges when Saif Ali Khan suffered a stabbing incident by a home intruder in April 2025. Following his recovery, filming commenced in April in Mumbai, with the team committed to delivering a high-quality period drama worthy of Netflix’s production standards.

Saif Ali Khan’s Netflix Legacy

Saif Ali Khan recalled his 10-year relationship with Netflix: “Netflix and I started off together 10 years ago… ‘Sacred Games’ was amazing. And I think it always stood for high quality.” Sacred Games, Netflix’s first Indian original series, is credited with kickstarting the streaming boom in India. Hum Hindustani continues this legacy with a historically significant narrative.

Saif also confirmed his second Netflix film “Kartavya,” a heartland crime drama where he plays a police officer torn between professional duty and family safety. This project with Red Chillies Entertainment demonstrates his continued commitment to streaming platforms.

Pratik Gandhi’s Character-Driven Roles

Pratik Gandhi, fresh from Saare Jahan Se Achha on Netflix, brings his affinity for politically and historically rooted narratives. He expressed enthusiasm: “When you’ve compelling stories, smart writing, brilliant directors, and talented actors, you’ve to amp up your game, and a platform gives you freedom to experiment.”

His police officer character represents institutional resolve in ensuring democratic principles, even amid chaos and resistance.

Thematic Significance and Production Philosophy

The team emphasized the responsibility of telling this story: “At the heart of Hum Hindustani lies one of the most defining promises of a newly independent India—the right to vote. It is a story of belief, courage and collective effort that shaped the nation we know today.”

The production commits to presenting this landmark chapter “with the scale and ambition it deserves, for audiences in India and far beyond.”
