What Is Phoolan About?
Forget a soup-to-nuts biopic. Richie Mehta is doing something bolder.
The film centres on a single, electrifying 48-hour siege in which Phoolan Devi is surrounded by thousands of armed men in the Chambal region — a confrontation that would either end her life or rewrite the rules of a man’s world. Rather than a cradle-to-grave retelling, the project is built as a high-octane character study Esquire India — intimate, intense, and unsparing.
Phoolan Devi rose from a background of caste oppression and violence to become a feared bandit leader in the ravines of the Chambal valley, before surrendering to authorities and eventually being elected to the Indian Parliament. Mehta is not interested in all of that. He wants the one moment that defined everything.
Director & Production
Mehta admitted he initially resisted the project, saying producers Shareen Mantri Kedia, Kishor Arora, and Kanwal Kohli had approached him years ago — shortly after Delhi Crime — after securing the rights to Devi’s autobiography. They believed he was the right person for the story, and clearly, they were right to be patient.
The film will be produced by Namah Pictures, with Mantri Kedia, Arora, Kohli, and Mehta serving as producers.
Cast
The lead role has not yet been officially confirmed. Mehta is reportedly seeking an actor who can convincingly portray Devi’s journey from youth to her violent end — a popular Bollywood actor known for a hit web series recently auditioned with a jail sequence. NewsBytes Expect an announcement soon.
OTT Release Date & How to Watch

FAQs
Q: Is Phoolan a web series or a film?
It is a feature film, not a multi-episode series. The project is designed as a high-octane character study focused on a limited timeframe Esquire India, making it a standalone film experience.
Q: Is Phoolan connected to the 1994 film Bandit Queen?
No. This is an entirely new and independent production based on the same historical figure. Mehta’s film zeroes in on one specific siege episode, while Shekhar Kapur’s 1994 classic was a broader biographical portrait. Both are separate works.
