Perfect Blue Finally Streams: A Psychological Anime Classic Lands on Netflix

Anime fans have a reason to mark their calendars: Perfect Blue, the 1997 psychological horror classic from director Satoshi Kon, arrives on Netflix on September 1, 2026. It’s a rare chance for both longtime fans and newcomers to experience one of anime’s most influential films in one place.

Perfect Blue: Overview

What’s It About?

Perfect Blue follows Mima Kirigoe, a J-Pop idol who steps away from music to pursue acting. Her career shift enrages an obsessive stalker, and as gruesome murders start happening around her — paired with a fake online diary impersonating her — Mima’s grip on reality begins to unravel. The film blurs the line between fiction, hallucination, and truth in ways that still feel unsettling decades later.

Why It Matters

Perfect Blue was Satoshi Kon’s directorial debut, and it set the template for the reality-bending style he’d become known for in later works like Millennium Actress and Paprika. Its unflinching look at celebrity obsession and identity has only grown more relevant in the social media age, and it remains a touchstone reference for filmmakers working in psychological thriller and horror today.

Both the Japanese and English dubs will be available on Netflix, giving audiences flexibility in how they experience the film.
