Patriot Box Office: Malayalam Cinema’s Most Anticipated Reunion Turns Into Its Biggest Disappointment of 2026

When Mammootty and Mohanlal — arguably the two greatest superstars in Malayalam cinema history — share the screen together, expectations reach the stratosphere. That is precisely what made Patriot‘s box office collapse so painful to watch. The Mahesh Narayanan-directed spy thriller had everything going for it on paper, and almost nothing worked in practice.

Patriot : The 2nd Monday Reality Check

The numbers on Day 11 tell a brutal story. Patriot collected just Rs 50 lakh on its 2nd Monday — a 35% drop from its 2nd Friday, and a crushing 70% plunge from its 1st Monday figure. For a film carrying two legends of this magnitude, that kind of freefall is almost unimaginable.

Where Is It Heading?

The film is expected to close its second week at around Rs 29 crore and wrap its entire theatrical run at approximately Rs 35 crore at the Kerala box office — a deeply underwhelming finish for a film of this star power and pre-release buzz.

Why Did It Fail?

The short answer is audience response. Patriot met with mixed-to-negative reactions from viewers, which is the primary reason the numbers fell off so sharply after its opening weekend. Had the film delivered on its promise, the trajectory would have looked very different. A massive opening day of Rs 8.50 crore showed the goodwill both legends command — but word of mouth simply didn’t sustain it.

What Comes Next for Mohanlal?

Even as Patriot fades from theatres, all eyes are now turning to Drishyam 3, with fans and analysts alike wondering whether Mohanlal can recapture the magic of one of Malayalam cinema’s most beloved franchises. After this setback, the pressure on Drishyam 3 to deliver couldn’t be higher.
