Everyone knows Vision grew out of Tony Stark’s AI assistant, JARVIS. But VisionQuest has now shown that his roots run much deeper, all the way back to 1939. Episode 7 turns Vision’s source code into a family secret, and it sets up a big finale. Here’s the breakdown.

Vision’s Deeper Stark Connection
According to showrunner Terry Matalas, speaking to Marvel.com, the idea comes from the original comics, where Vision was built from components of the original Synthetic Man. The MCU nodded to that figure in Captain America: The First Avenger. Matalas says the show treats it as a family mystery, with Stark Industries tech running through Vision’s code the way genes run through a person.
Meet JIM, the Original Synthezoid
Episode 7 opens with a 1939 flashback. Grieving inventor Phineas Horton lost his son James three years earlier, and he pours everything he has into building a synthetic being who can’t suffer as humans do. The creation, JIM, is also Jim Hammond, the MCU’s first synthezoid. In a nice callback, JIM appears in a glass tube at the 1943 Stark Expo in Captain America: The First Avenger, which ties him firmly into Stark Industries’ history.
JIM never found the peaceful life Horton imagined. He longed to feel, but his inability to handle complex emotions burned him out, quite literally. His body eventually reached Markridge Biotech, whose AI work Tony Stark later bought. That research became the foundation for Ultron and, ultimately, Vision. When Vision dives into his own code, he meets JIM, who wears Vision’s own face.

The Client’s Shocking Identity
The episode also reveals the Client’s face: the same face worn by Ultron’s human avatar, played by James Spader. The Client is a human and one of Markridge Biotech’s founders, and he is Jo Carrington’s former lover. Together they created Proto One, the first artificial general intelligence, built on JIM’s code. Ultron’s avatar is modelled on the Client because his code descends from Proto One, so he has carried this man’s likeness all along without knowing it.
What the Finale May Bring?
The Client now has Vision in his custody after the two struck a deal to save Lisa Molinari. Vision holds the purest form of JIM’s original code, so the Client likely wants it for a large-scale plan. Ultron also faces a reckoning. In Episode 4, when EDITH wondered who she was based on, he said he was “dreamed up in a lab” and couldn’t explain his choice of face. The finale may force him to face his origin the way Vision did.
Why This Reveal Works?
The twist reframes the whole MCU AI storyline. Rather than starting with Tony Stark, artificial intelligence in this universe traces back to a grieving father in 1939. That gives Vision new emotional weight, since his identity is built on love, loss and the longing to feel.
