When two of Malayalam cinema’s biggest legends share the screen together, expectations naturally go through the roof. Sadly, Patriot — the much-hyped reunion of Mammootty and Mohanlal — has turned out to be one of the most disappointing box office stories of 2026. The numbers are telling a very grim tale.

Day 7	Rs. 1.00 crore
Days 8–10	Rs. 2.90 crore

A Freefall That Says It All

Patriot recorded a dismal third weekend, adding just Rs. 35 lakh to its tally, with its third Sunday contributing around Rs. 15 lakh. The movie saw a sharp decline of 80 per cent from the second weekend — which was itself disappointing.

To put that in perspective — Patriot opened to Rs. 8.50 crore on Day 1, riding entirely on the star power of its legendary lead duo. But once the audience verdict came in, the film collapsed faster than almost anyone anticipated. From an Rs. 8.50 crore opening day to a Rs. 15 lakh Sunday in Week 3 is as brutal a drop as you’ll see in Malayalam cinema.

Won’t Even Cross Rs. 30 Crore — A Harsh Verdict

Currently standing at Rs. 29.10 crore, the movie is looking to wrap its third week around Rs. 29.30 crore or so. Patriot won’t be able to cross the Rs. 30 crore mark in Kerala in its entire theatrical run.

For a film headlined by two superstars of the magnitude of Mammootty and Mohanlal — both legends of Malayalam cinema with decades of blockbusters between them — a sub-Rs. 30 crore lifetime is nothing short of a catastrophe. The spy thriller directed by Mahesh Narayanan simply didn’t connect with the audience despite massive pre-release goodwill.

All Eyes Now on Drishyam 3

While Patriot turned out to be a disaster, all hopes and expectations are now firmly on Drishyam 3. The upcoming Mohanlal starrer is witnessing solid pre-sales, suggesting a record start at the box office. If the movie manages to gain a positive audience reception, the sky will be the limit for its box office potential.

Malayalam fans are now desperately waiting for Drishyam 3 to restore pride — and based on the early presale numbers, the franchise is looking primed for a massive opening. Mohanlal will be looking to bounce back hard.
