Papon Revives Ghazals with Passion Project Mehfilz

Papon Mehfilz: Papon is breathing new life into the timeless art of ghazals with his ambitious passion project, Mehfilz. His aim is to connect classic poetic storytelling with the tastes of a modern audience.

Currently, the project is set to debut on an OTT platform, but as of July 6, 2026, details like the release date, production house, and cast have yet to be announced. What we do know is that the singer-composer wants to keep the essence of a traditional mehfil—a gathering where friends share music—rather than performing for a faceless crowd.

The genesis of this artistic journey spans nearly two decades. Recently, Papon shared insights about his creative process with Bollywoodhungama. He emphasizes that evolution is at the core of this project, stating, “sound has to change in every generation” to stay relevant. This philosophy shaped his development period, where he worked closely with lyricist Irshad Kamil to ensure the music feels both genuine and fresh. For those curious about how traditional genres are adapting to the digital age, keeping an eye on the latest trends in Indian music offers insight into how legacy artists are shifting towards streaming-first strategies to engage younger listeners.

Can a genre as steeped in history as the ghazal find a lasting home on a streaming service? Papon certainly thinks so. By featuring close friends who share his love for the craft instead of high-profile celebrities, he emphasizes the sincerity of the project.

He imagines a setting where the listener feels like a guest in a cozy room, surrounded by the organic sounds of guitars and tablas. This stands in sharp contrast to the polished, often impersonal vibe of modern pop music videos.

By embracing the “mehfil” atmosphere—where the artist performs for both themselves and the audience—Papon taps into a desire for authenticity that many streaming users feel is lacking today.

This project explores how ghazals can be modernized, and its success largely hinges on whether they can recreate that “circle of friends” vibe on screen. As the industry evolves, the ability to retain the soul of a performance while refreshing the sound for contemporary ears will shape the project’s long-term impact.

Still, without a confirmed release date or a major production banner, the excitement remains tempered. We’re keeping an eye on whether this passion project can ignite a wider revival of the genre. If Papon captures the magic of his childhood inspirations while appealing to the modern OTT audience, Mehfilz could set a new standard for presenting legacy music in India.
