Gareth Southgate to continue as England manager through Euro 2024

0

Gareth Southgate will be staying on as the England manager until the 2024 Euros. This will see him become the longest-serving manager in the history of the country, after leading the Three Lions into the quarter finals of the 2022 World Cup

His side came up short against eventual runners-up, France, but the English FA were impressed with what they saw. And as a result, they have decided that he is still the right man to watch over the first team.

Gareth Southgate to continue as England manager

“We are delighted to confirm that Gareth Southgate is continuing as England manager and will lead our Euro 2024 campaign. Gareth and [assistant manager] Steve Holland have always had full support, and our planning for the Euros starts now,” and official statement from the FA read.

England have a very exciting young squad, with the likes of Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Reece James, Mason Mount, Declan Rice and Marcus Rashford coming up.

Now, it remains to be seen whether they can turn their fortunes around in time for the Euros. They will be facing defending European champions Italy in the qualifying stages itself, in a repeat of the 2020 finals which they lost on penalties.

Fans have been divided in their opinion about Gareth Southgate, but his trust in young players and ability to lead the team deep into major tournaments remains unquestioned.

AMD claims that its RDNA 3 Shader Pre-Fetching works fine

0

According to a statement made by AMD to Tom’s Hardware, reports that AMD’s rDNA 3 GPUs have defective shader pre-fetch functionality is false. AMD’s announcement follows media claims that the recently released Navi31 technology in the RDNA 3 graphics cards contains ‘non-working shader pre-fetch circuitry.’ @Kepler L2 provided code from the Mesa3D drivers that looked to imply the shader pre-fetch doesn’t work for some GPUs with the A0 revision of the hardware (CHIP GFZ1100, CHIP GFX1102, and CHIP GFZ110).

“Like previous hardware generations, shader pre-fetching is supported on RDNA 3 as per [gitlab link]. The code in question controls an experimental function that was not targeted for inclusion in these products and will not be enabled in this generation of products. This is a common industry practice to include experimental features to enable exploration and tuning for deployment in a future product generation.” — AMD Spokesperson to Tom’s Hardware.

According to AMD’s comment, the code cited by Kepler L2 related to an experimental function that was not planned for the final RDNA 3 products, hence it is deactivated for the time being. AMD points out that integrating experimental features in new silicon is a very standard procedure, which is correct – we’ve seen this strategy employed with other types of processors, such as CPUs.

For example, AMD sold an entire generation of Ryzen 3000 products with the TSVs required to enable 3D V-Cache but didn’t use the technology until the Ryzen 5000 era was over. Similarly, Intel frequently adds features that may or may not be included in the final product, with its DLVR functionality being a recent example.

Naturally, one would anticipate that if an ‘experimental’ feature works flawlessly, it will be incorporated into the final product if no additional accommodations are required (like the additional L3 cache slice needed for 3D V-Cache). As a result, the distinction between an ‘experimental’ or ‘good to have but not critical or required to hit targets’ feature may be blurred. In either instance, AMD claims that the pre-fetch method works well on RDNA 3.

The second elephant in the room is AMD’s usage of an A0 stepping of the RDNA 3 silicon, which means this is the chip’s first physically unaltered version. This has led to rumors that AMD is shipping ‘unfinished silicon,’ but such conjecture is unfounded.

AMD would not comment on our questions about whether it used A0 silicon for the first wave of RDNA 3 CPUs, although industry sources say it did with Navi31.

According to our sources, the corporation launched with A0-revision silicon for practically all of the 6000 series and the majority of the 5000 series. This does not imply an ‘unfinished product.’ All design teams strive to get the design right on the first go with working, shippable silicon. Nvidia, for example, frequently ships A0 stepping silicon as well.

Throughout their lives, microprocessors can go through multiple versions, often to cure flaws or errata and/or increase performance. In general, the first revision of silicon from the fabs is A0, and subsequent minor respins (changes to the metal layer) are A1, A2, and so on. Silicon modifications cause the move to a ‘B’ or a subsequent letter, and so on. As the chip is developed, this will be repeated with updated alpha-numeric designators.

Almost all sophisticated chips have known and undiscovered errata and flaws, which are addressed with firmware, driver, and software workarounds that can decrease or remove those issues, and they ship that way – it’s the essence of current semiconductor design and manufacture. For example, Intel’s Skylake chip generation launched with 53 known errata, then six months later, Intel announced an additional 40 errata. This is prevalent since semiconductor design cycles are often years long, leaving little time to respin the chip to solve small faults. We notice similar trends with different processor types and generations.

Making chips is difficult; they are the most advanced class of electronics ever built by humanity, but they have nearly unimaginable little features. As a result, difficulties and errors may arise, necessitating further updates. Pay little attention to those who assert that an A0 stepping always means ‘unfinished silicon.’ Success is judged by the delivery of functional silicon that fulfills targets on the first try.

Argentina have won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, defeating France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw for the ages. Labelled by many as the best final to have ever been played in all these years, here are all the individual award winners from yesterday’s presentation.

Young Player of the Tournament – Enzo Fernandez

The Argentina midfielder earned the award for the best young player throughout the competition. He made a name for himself with a very impressive goal against Mexico, before establishing himself as a key player under Lionel Scaloni at the age of 21.

World Cup Golden Boot – Kylian Mbappe

Only two people in the history of football have scored a hat-trick in a World Cup final. And despite this feat, Mbappe came out on the losing side of the game. For scoring eight goals in seven games at the 2022 World Cup, Mbappe earned the Golden Boot award ahead of Messi, who scored seven.

World Cup Golden Glove – Emiliano Martinez

The Argentina goalkeeper had not even made his debut when Argentina last competed at a World Cup. And now, he has a winner’s medal and the Golden Glove for being the best goalkeeper at the tournament. Two penalty shootout wins, and a consistently strong presence at the back have earned him the award he very well deserves.

Player of the Tournament – Lionel Messi

Right up there with one of the GOATs now, Messi scored seven goals and provided three assists as Argentina won the World Cup. He is also the only player to have scored in every knockout fixture including the final. As a result, he has been given the trophy for being the best player in the entire tournament, alongside the coveted golden trophy.

Tech layoffs will reportedly get even worse in 2023

0

This year’s large layoffs by computer businesses have topped the levels seen during the 2008-2009 Great Recession, which began with the failure of Lehman Brothers. According to data from worldwide outplacement and career transitioning agency Challenger, Gray & Christmas, tech companies laid off approximately 65,000 employees in 2008, and a similar amount of individuals lost their jobs in 2009.

In comparison, 965 technology businesses globally lay off more than 150,000 workers this year, exceeding the Great Recession levels of 2008-2009. The tech layoffs, led by businesses like Meta, Amazon, Twitter, Microsoft, Salesforce, and others, are expected to intensify early next year due to persistent worldwide macroeconomic conditions.

According to a MarketWatch report, layoffs are part of a tech firm’s strategy to remain viable into 2023 and beyond.

According to data from layoffs. FYI, a crowdsourced database of tech layoffs, 1,495 tech companies have laid off 246,267 employees since the start of Covid-19, but 2022 has been the worst year for the tech sector, and early 2023 could be much worse.

As of mid-November, about 73,000 workers in the US tech sector have been thrown off as a result of large layoffs spearheaded by firms such as Meta, Twitter, Salesforce, Netflix, Cisco, Roku, and others.

In India, almost 17,000 tech workers have been laid off. Amazon and PC and printer giant HP Inc have entered the worldwide layoff season, with plans to lay off more than 20,000 and up to 6,000 people, respectively, in the coming days.

Meta, a networking company, has begun laying off roughly 4,000 people worldwide. Google is purportedly preparing for major layoffs early next year, and Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai has reportedly given no assurances to concerned Google employees that this will not occur.

FIFA World Cup Final – France vs Argentina: Thousands of empty seats at Lusail

0

France vs Argentina went down as one of the greatest World Cup finals to ever be played. The Albiceleste won their third World Cup trophy in Qatar, but there were thousands of empty seats to be found in the stands.

Empty seats were prominent especially once the second half started, when France were 2-0 down. But, they were able to come back down from 2-0 to make it 2-2 by the time the final whistle blew.

FIFA World Cup 2022 – empty seats at France vs Argentina

The FIFA World Cup final has largely been considered the most highly anticipated, and most watched sporting fixture every four years. And no doubt, fans were tuning in from all parts of the world to see the two countries battle it out for the top prize in international football.

But Qatar’s ability to provide a capacity crowd for the sporting spectacle has seriously come under question. Even as the game reached a gripping conclusion, all the way till the penalty shootout, the 88,966-capacity Lusail Stadium had unmanned seats throughout.

This isn’t the case for the final alone, with matches from all over the tournament experiencing a lack of capacity audience in attendance. And as a result, Qatar’s passion for the sport has come under question.

IND vs BAN 1st Test: India won the first test by 188 runs, climbing to 2nd spot of WTC

India defeated Bangladesh in the 1st Test and is still in the race for the World Test Championship finale. Indian batters like Pujara, Gill, and gave a complete performance and important wickets from Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel on the last day helped them lead the series.

The visitors won the opening match of the two-match Test series despite Bangladesh’s last four wickets falling all before midday on the last day, despite a valiant rearguard effort by veteran Shakib Al Hasan (84).

“We’ve been here for a while, and the one-day series didn’t go how we wanted it to. A hard-fought Test, and really happy we won. The pitch did flatten out – it did worry us – but in the first few innings, it was difficult to get runs. Important that the lower order contributes. Shubman and Puji utilised the opportunity and got hundreds. Seamers got wickets in the first innings… we’ve always had a good bowling attack.”– Winning captain KL Rahul said

On the final day of the first test, Axar Patel’s figure was 4/77 and Kuldeep Yadav’s was 3/73 and India wrapped up the game in 50 minutes. Siraj dismissed Mehidy while he chased a wide delivery. Bangladesh scalped just four wickets. Shakib- Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan remained unbeaten while 241 runs were still remaining. Mehidy smashed a boundary and Shakin Al Hasan freed himself. At the end of this clinical victory, KL Rahul took a 1-0 lead keeping the WTC final dream still alive.

With India winning the first test, they received 12 points and have a winning percentage of 55.77 and currently stand at the No.2 position of the WTC rankings. Australia is reserved the top spot. Earlier in 2022, India will host Australia for four Test games in February and March next year and they need to finish in the top two places in order to feature in the WTC Championship final. In the maiden WTC final, Rohit Sharma and Co. lost against New Zealand and this seems to be a perfect opportunity to take revenge.

Lionel Messi has finally etched his name in the Greatest Of All Time list. The only trophy which eluded him has now been finally won! Argentina won the 2022 World Cup 4-2 on penalties, following a 3-3 draw that can easily be considered one of the best games in the history of the sport.

Argentina started the match in an outstanding fashion and was 2-0 up in the first half. France started playing from the 80th minute onwards as Mbappe’s 2 goals in 97 seconds made the score equal and from then on it was one of the best-ever finals. Messi and Mbappe both scored in the extra time and eventually, it went on to the penalties. Emiliano Martinez is a completely different goalkeeper in penalties and deservedly won the match for Argentina as Messi lifts the World Cup.

Argentina have won the 2022 World Cup 4-2 on penalties, following a 3-3 draw that can easily be considered one of the best games in the history of the sport.

Lionel Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot, after Angel Di Maria was lightly fouled by Ousmane Dembele. Argentina followed up their captain’s goal with a sensational counter attack to double their lead, and pile up the pressure on the defending champions.

France were completely outplayed in the initial part of the game, with the forwards barely involved. In an attempt to change things up, Didier Deschamps subbed off Olivier Giroud and Ousmane Dembele at the 40th minute in favour of Randal Kolo Muani and Marcus Thuram.

Argentina win the 2022 World Cup 4-2 on penalties

After barely being allowed time on the ball in the first half, the second period saw the French come out with much more stable. Kylian Mbappe found the back of the net for the first time from the penalty spot, before scoring a second only seconds later, equalising the scoreline and sending the game into extra time.

Lionel Messi and co thought they had the winner in the second period, with a finish from close range. However, a handball in the dying stages of the game saw Mbappe earn and convert a second penalty to make it 3-3.

During the penalty shootout, Kingsley Coman was denied by Emi Martinez while Aurelien Tchouameni fired his shot wide. All of Argentina’s takers were able to beat Hugo Lloris, as Argentina were crowned the new champions of the world.

Moto X40 revealed with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and a 165Hz OLED display

0

Motorola introduced Moto X40 as company’s cheapest 5G phone for the foreseeable future and the other is a luxury X-series handset. These are initially beginning in China, but they should eventually spread to the rest of the world in some capacity.

Moto X40 features

The previous X30 Pro featured a unique combination of robust hardware and a fair price. This new model, the Motorola Moto X40, doesn’t identify as a “pro,” but it still cranks up the power with a 165Hz display and the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU. Motorola really does love their high refresh rate screens.

The screen is 6.7″ diagonal and features a 1,080 x 2,400 pixel resolution. It is a 10-bit panel with DC dimming and HDR10+ support. The fingerprint reader was previously situated on the side, but is now located beneath the display. With the potent Adreno 740 GPU and the company’s first 165Hz display, this device might displace expensive gaming smartphones.

Moto X40

Whether it is a Pro or not, the X40 offers 125W cable charging and wireless charging, however at a lower 15W rate than the 50W of the X30 Pro. However, non-Pro Motos typically don’t even bother. The cable charger will get you from a dead battery to 50% in just 7 minutes if you need to charge the phone as quickly as possible. The battery has a 4,600mAh capacity.

Similar rationale can be used to explain why the X40’s camera has a 50MP sensor (1/1.56″) rather than a 200MP primary sensor. It supports 4-in-1 binning, OIS, and 1.0 m native pixels. The X40 series could yet introduce a flagship model as a result.

An ultra wide-angle lens (117°) with a 50MP sensor (1.3 m pixels) is located next to the primary camera. Since it has autofocus, it can capture macro shots as close as 2.5 cm/1. Additionally, there is a 12MP (IMX663, 1.22 m pixel) 2x portrait camera on board. There is a 60MP selfie camera with a punch hole in the centre for taking selfies. With the exception of the main sensor, this arrangement is pretty identical to the X30 Pro.

Moto X40

It has an 11-layer cooling system that is used to cool the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU. It comes with different variants like 8/12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 128, 256, or even 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage are combined with the chipset. There is no support of 3.5mm jack, microSD card.

With an IP68 designation, the X40 formally declares its water resistance (it can withstand 1.5m/5ft of water for 30 minutes).

Moto X40

The rear of Moto X40 is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus with a soft-touch finish, while the mid-frame is built of 7000-series aluminium (available in Blue and Black). The information offered by Motorola is hazy, so we’re not certain if it holds true for the front as well. In any case, the phone is about the same thickness as its predecessor at 8.6mm and weighs 199g.

The entry-level 8/128GB model costs CNY 3,400 ($490/€460/Rs. 40,500). For comparison, the Moto X30 Pro (the model used to create the Edge 30 Ultra globally) had a starting price of CNY 3,700 for an 8/128GB variant. Other options are available as well, including 8/256GB for CNY 3,700, 12/256GB for CNY 4,000, and 12/512GB for CNY 4,300.
