Argentina win the 2022 World Cup beating France 4-2 on penalties after a match for the ages

Argentina have won the 2022 World Cup 4-2 on penalties, following a 3-3 draw that can easily be considered one of the best games in the history of the sport.

Lionel Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot, after Angel Di Maria was lightly fouled by Ousmane Dembele. Argentina followed up their captain’s goal with a sensational counter attack to double their lead, and pile up the pressure on the defending champions.

France were completely outplayed in the initial part of the game, with the forwards barely involved. In an attempt to change things up, Didier Deschamps subbed off Olivier Giroud and Ousmane Dembele at the 40th minute in favour of Randal Kolo Muani and Marcus Thuram.

After barely being allowed time on the ball in the first half, the second period saw the French come out with much more stable. Kylian Mbappe found the back of the net for the first time from the penalty spot, before scoring a second only seconds later, equalising the scoreline and sending the game into extra time.

Lionel Messi and co thought they had the winner in the second period, with a finish from close range. However, a handball in the dying stages of the game saw Mbappe earn and convert a second penalty to make it 3-3.

During the penalty shootout, Kingsley Coman was denied by Emi Martinez while Aurelien Tchouameni fired his shot wide. All of Argentina’s takers were able to beat Hugo Lloris, as Argentina were crowned the new champions of the world.
