Lenovo Updates its ThinkPad series with latest Intel and AMD Processors

Lenovo unveiled a slew of new ThinkPads recently as part of its Mobile World Congress announcements. The majority of these are specification updates, though some include minor design changes, such as new materials. Lenovo’s AMD-focused Z series, ThinkPad X13 and 13 Yoga, new T and L-series refreshes, and the ThinkPad E-series aimed at small businesses are all getting updates.

The ThinkPad Z13 and Z16 Gen 2 update to last year’s AMD-powered models. This year, they’ll ship with AMD Ryzen 7000-series processors. The Z13 will have integrated Radeon graphics, while the Z16 will have a discrete AMD Radeon 6550M option. Both will be able to support up to 64GB of RAM and 2TB of SSD storage. Both laptops will be available with a 1920 x 1200, 16:10 screen; the 13-inch will be available with a 2880 x 1800 OLED panel, while the 16-inch will be available with a 3840 x 2400 OLED touchscreen.

Lenovo’s Z-series debuts a new “woven flax” material bonded to the recycled aluminum top cover.

It will retain many of the features that set it apart from other ThinkPads, such as a haptic touchpad and TrackPoint Quick Menu, as well as a 1080p webcam and Wi-Fi 6E. The haptic touchpads in this generation are made by Sensei, the same company that created the touchpads in the ThinkPad X1 Titanium Yoga and ThinkPad X1 Fold. Sensei’s technology was not present in the previous-generation Z series, so we’ll have to wait for some hands-on time to see if there’s a discernible difference.

Lenovo claims that the ThinkPad X13 Gen 5 and ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 5 have smaller bezels for a higher screen-to-body ratio. The speakers are now top-firing, which should improve audio (though on the 2-in-1 Yoga, this may mean they face away in some situations), and there’s an optional 5-megapixel camera with infrared. The clamshell model gets a 13.3-inch 2880 x 1800 OLED screen with Dolby Vision support as well.

The standard  Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 4 laptop will feature 13th Gen Intel Core processors as well as AMD Ryzen 7000 series mobile processors. 

It will support up to 32GB of LPDDR5 memory and 2TB of PCIe Gen 4 SSD storage. The 13.3-inch display will be available in resolutions ranging from 1920 x 1200 non-touch (with a configurable touch option) to high-resolution OLED. The Yoga version will only use Intel CPUs but will have the same memory and storage options as the other models. The 13.3-inch models will have a 1920 x 1200 touchscreen. Both will begin with an FHD webcam with a privacy shutter, with the 5MP with IR being an upgrade. The X13 and X13 Yoga will both be available in May 2023, with the clamshell starting at $1,099 and the 2-in-1 starting at $1,379.

Lenovo’s steadfast T series is getting “incremental enhancements,” such as sustainable materials and an optional 5 MP camera. The ThinkPad T14 Gen 5, T16 Gen 2, and T14s Gen 4 will all be available with a 2880 x 1880 OLED display. All three devices will be equipped with either 13th Generation Intel Core processors with vPro or Ryzen 7000 chips. These laptops will be available in May 2023, with the T14s starting at $1,479, the T14 starting at $1,239, and the T16 starting at $1,269.

It’s needless to say how Qualcomm has changed its fortune by adopting newer TSMC nodes and its chips have stopped heating, which is again a reason why OEMs and smartphone makers are once again opting for their chips. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 was released in May of last year, but it received little to no widespread adoption.

The upcoming SM7475 chipset will be built on TSMC’s 4 nm node, as opposed to the vanilla Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 which was built on a Samsung process.

AnTuTu recently discovered “SM7475,” or the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 processor, inside a Realme device. The realm phone with Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 model number SM7475 scored 10,29,731 points on AnTuTu, which is comparable to or better than some Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 devices, but the specifications are not yet available.

Compared to traditional MMORPG games, incorporating ray tracing in open-world games has significant technical challenges, especially on the mobile platform. Perfect World Games developed techniques such as a distance-based dynamic object frame-updating mechanism and range-based ray tracing culling based on light source perspective, which enables players to experience real-time stable frames while enjoying ray tracing effects.

Additionally, for the open-world scenes in Tower of Fantasy, the ray tracing acceleration structures are further optimized by employing small object culling and view frustum culling based on camera frustum solid angle. By accurately simulating the propagation and interaction of light rays, players can immerse themselves in the Vera desert and experience the more realistic effect of flames from the surroundings and the hot sand underfoot.

Normally, open world MMORPG game experience is more immersive than traditional MMORPG games due to more realistic detailed objects, and this experience is further elevated by ray tracing technology. Occlusion and shadows in open-world scenes are accurately calculated to precisely illuminate and shade objects of all sizes and scales in the Tower of Fantasy. This is totally different from traditional rendering methods which often miss intricate details in scenes, leading to inaccurate or missing occlusion and shadows. For instance, by calculating the occlusion effect of the scene under a uniform intensity of light, ray tracing on Tower of Fantasy enhances and improves the contrast between light and dark in the visuals, achieving more realistic shadows and ultimately adding a stronger sense of spatial depth and realism to the game’s environments.

The introduction of mobile ray tracing technology also enables more accurate capturing of shadows and occlusion effects of objects in the distance and behind other objects, resulting in better visual performance compared to traditional rendering techniques.

Moreover, with mobile ray tracing enabled, the game improves the effect of simulating the absorption of physically accurate light as it passes through and reflects off water surfaces. The difficulty here is that light is comprised of various wavelengths of light waves, and when these light waves enter the water, they are absorbed differently.

Ray Tracing on the OnePlus 11 5G

The objective of this partnership is to improve the visual and performance experience on mobile devices. To improve the graphics quality, engineers from OnePlus and Perfect World Games co-developed the Real-time Inline Ray Tracing Pipeline and a novel Fast Temporal Convergence Algorithm for Ambient Occlusion, specifically tailored to meet the demands of “Tower of Fantasy” by utilizing a forward rendering pipeline.

To cope with the demanding graphics computing power brought by ray tracing technology, Spatiotemporal Oversampling is employed.
