Triumphant Karnataka Shatters 54-Year Drought to Claim Santosh Trophy 2023 Championship: Celebrating the Santosh Trophy 2023 Winners

The Santosh Trophy is one of the oldest and most prestigious football tournaments in India. The tournament has a rich history, having been played since 1941. This year’s tournament saw some of the most exciting matches in recent memory, culminating in a thrilling final between Karnataka and Meghalaya.

In a game that had everything, Karnataka emerged victorious, beating Meghalaya 3-2. The win was historic for Karnataka, as they won the trophy after a gap of 54 years, having previously won four times as the princely state of Mysore.

Let’s take a closer look at the winners of the 2023 Santosh Trophy and how they clinched the title

The Road to the Final

The Santosh Trophy is a knockout tournament, with teams from different Indian states competing against each other. Karnataka was drawn in Group B alongside Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. They won both their group matches, beating Punjab 2-0 and Jammu & Kashmir 1-0.

In the quarterfinals, Karnataka faced Manipur and won 3-1 to progress to the semifinals. In the semifinals, they faced Services, the defending champions, and won 2-0 to reach the final.

The Final

In the final, Karnataka faced Meghalaya, who had beaten Kerala in the semifinals. The match was played at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and was attended by a couple of thousand Indian expatriates.

Karnataka took the lead in the second minute, thanks to a long throw from Robin Yadav that opened up a chance for Sunil Kumar. Sunil fired an angular half-volley that deflected off a Meghalaya defender’s leg and found the net. However, Meghalaya won a penalty in the eighth minute and equalized through Brolington Warlarphi.

Karnataka regained the lead in the 19th minute when Sunil Kumar set up Bekey Oram, who made no mistake with his finishing. Robin Yadav extended the lead just before halftime, sending home a delectable free-kick taken from just outside the box. Meghalaya pulled one back at the hour-mark through Sheen Sohktung’s sensational right-footed curler from the left side of the box into the top right corner. However, Karnataka’s resilience stood the test of time, and they secured the historic win.

The Celebrations

Karnataka’s win brought out wild celebrations, with fans and players alike overjoyed at the historic win. The win was a testament to the team’s hard work and determination, and they will be remembered for years to come.

ATK Mohun Bagan defeat Odisha FC 2-0 to qualify for ISL semifinals

ATK Mohun Bagan have moved to the semi-finals of the 2022/23 ISL season, after defeating Odisha FC 2-0 at the Salt Lake Stadium. A goal in each half from Hugo Boumous and Dimitri Petratos helped the team deal a comfortable win and set up a semi-final meeting with Hyderabad FC.

Ashique Kuruniyan picked up an injury early in the game, and had to be substituted. Liston Colaco came on for his injured teammate, and proved to be a constant threat for Odisha during the match.

Vishal Kaith was also injured during the game, suffering a blow to the head during a free-kick situation. The goalkeeper had to be replaced by Arsh Shaikh, and was rushed to the hospital. It remains unclear whether he will be back in time for the semi-final.

“Our plan was to find space behind their right and left-backs. Obviously, it was difficult because after one moment in the match, we had to change some details due to the injury to Ashique. Ashique is different from Liston. This is the first time we played Carl (McHugh) and Puitea together, since the away game to Chennaiyin FC,” Juan Ferrando said in the post-match press conference.

“It was necessary to change the plans. It’s different when you play Bengaluru FC or Odisha FC. The press is different (and other details). Every match is different and the plans as well. The players in this case were magnificent all the time. After 1-0, we were more comfortable on the field,” he added.

ATK Mohun Bagan were defeated by Hyderabad FC last season, as they went on to win the Cup. But this season, things could turn around differently for the Mariners given their reinforced squad.

Anti-Emi Martinez rule to be enforced by FIFA from 2023/24 season

0

Emiliano Martinez was recently named FIFA’s The Best Goalkeeper of 2022. And now, the anti-Emi Martinez rule is in the works, to make the Argentine shotstopper’s antics truly unique.

One of the most distinct features of the Aston Villa player is his ability to trash talk opponents before penalties. His mind games led to the team winning the 2022 World Cup on penalties, but there was a lot of shithousery involved. And now, FIFA are planning to introduce a new rule which will prevent the goalkeeper from engaging with the penalty taker before their spot kick.

Anti-Emi Martinez rule to be introduced after World Cup antics

The Argentine was vital to their World Cup win, but he distracted the France players enough to earn a yellow card in the shootout. He did the same during the 2021 Copa America, which Argentina also won.

And this has prompted other goalkeepers to follow his actions and try to distract penalty takers. But FIFA’s new anti-Emi Martinez rule will prevent the goalkeepers from talking to the penalty taker, touching the net or the posts or stepping off their line before the shot is taken.

In addition, FIFA are also planning to introduce a stopwatch system into the game. This will result in the clock being stopped every time the ball goes out of play so that the actual time that football is played ends up being 90 minutes.

Liverpool set to have a midfield overhaul with many expected departures in summer of 2023

Liverpool are expected to have a massive squad overhaul in the summer, with multiple players expected to leave. The midfield has been the main problem for the club this season, with their current players in that position underperforming massively.

The likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson have been extremely out of form. Thiago Alcantara’s injury struggles have not made things any easier for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who currently sit sixth in the table, six points away from the Champions League places.

Liverpool anticipating midfield overhaul in the summer of 2023

Roberto Firmino is already expected to leave the club in the summer, but he is one of their attacking options. Naby Keita’s contract expires in the summer, and there are currently no talks being held with him to renew beyond the season. Injuries have significantly hampered his progress, and he is now expected to move on.

Moreover, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will also leave as a free agent since the club doesn’t see him as a part of their future project. He will be joined by Arthur Melo, who has barely played due to injury. Liverpool will not activate the buy option in his loan deal, and he will return to Juventus at the end of the season.

There is a good chance that James Milner could also end his stay at the club, with his deal running out in the summer. The 37-year-old has been called upon as a full-back on several occasions this season. But given the severity of their performance, it seems unlikely that the club will extend his stay beyond this year.
