The Pogues’ last ride didn’t quite match their earlier highs, but Outer Banks still proved it has plenty of pull left. Season 5, the show’s final chapter, debuted with 9.4 million views in its opening week on Netflix — enough for the top spot among English-language shows, even as the number trails every prior season’s launch.

A Strong Debut, Softer Than Before

For the week of August 17–23, Outer Banks season 5 racked up 80.6 million viewing hours, translating to 9.4 million views based on its runtime. That was good enough to top Netflix’s English TV list for the week, ahead of second-place My Brilliant Career at 4.7 million views, and marked the show’s fourth consecutive season debuting at number one.

Still, the number represents a real decline from the show’s peak. Season 3 remains the franchise’s high point with 17.4 million opening-week views, and season 5 finished behind every previous data-tracked season, including season 2’s 12.2 million despite that season having one extra release day to accumulate views.

Outer Banks: Overview

Season	Opening Week Views
Season 3	17.4M
Season 4	15.5M
Season 2	12.2M
Season 5	9.4M

Season 5’s debut lands roughly 46% below the franchise’s season 3 peak. For context against other recent Netflix returning titles that launched on a Thursday, season 5 still lands respectably — behind juggernauts like Emily in Paris season 3 (21.4M) and Ginny & Georgia season 3 (17.6M), but ahead of shows like The Umbrella Academy season 4 and The Witcher season 4.

Critical Reception Slips Alongside Viewership

Season 5 held onto a 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, consistent with the franchise’s critical track record. The audience score tells a different story, though, landing at 38% — its lowest of the series. That decline continues a downward trend since the show’s near-universally loved season 1 (85%), following backlash tied to a major character death in the season 4 finale.

Where the Show Dominated — and Where It Struggled

Globally, Outer Banks season 5 charted in the Top 10 across 84 countries, holding the number-one spot throughout its opening weekend in Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland, along with strong performances across Eastern Europe, the Baltics, and the MENA region. The US and UK debuted at number one before slipping to number two by the weekend’s end.

The show’s international soft spots were more pronounced this time around, falling out of the Top 10 quickly in markets like Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines, and barely registering in South American countries like Peru and Bolivia.

What’s Next for the Franchise

Even as the main series wraps up, Netflix reportedly has a prequel series in early development, though it hasn’t been greenlit. Given season 5’s still-solid, if declining, performance, the streamer’s next moves on the franchise will likely hinge on how these numbers hold up in the weeks ahead.
