His decision to depart marks the conclusion of a chapter filled with record-breaking contracts, notable achievements, and an enduring connection with fans.

Arrival Amidst Chinese Super League Boom

Oscar’s journey in China began in January 2017 when Shanghai SIPG, now known as Shanghai Port, paid a staggering £60 million to Chelsea for his services. At the time, the CSL was attracting global attention with high-profile signings and lucrative offers, luring some of football’s biggest names. Oscar’s reported salary of £400,000 per week made headlines, solidifying his place as one of the best-paid athletes in the sport.

Despite initial skepticism over his decision to leave European football at just 25, the midfielder embraced his new chapter with determination. Speaking about his move, Oscar reflected: “I love Shanghai, but it’s just too far away from home for us. We can’t stay here forever.”

On-Field Impact and Silverware

Oscar’s numbers during his tenure with Shanghai Port are nothing short of remarkable. In 248 appearances across all competitions, the Brazilian scored 77 goals and delivered 141 assists.

These contributions played a pivotal role in the club’s success, which included:

Three Chinese Super League Titles: 2018, 2023, and 2024

Overwhelmed by emotion, Oscar couldn’t hold back tears as he waved goodbye to a devoted fanbase that had supported him throughout his journey.

Reflecting on his time in China, Oscar said: “The quality of life here is unique in the world. I’ve never seen anything like it in Europe. Wherever I go, it won’t be like here. There’s no way to change that.”

An Astounding Financial Legacy
