Oscars 2025 at Risk: LA Wildfires Threaten to Cancel Ceremony for the First Time in 96 Years

The Oscars 2025 faces an unprecedented challenge as the Los Angeles wildfires threaten to derail the iconic event for the first time in its 96-year history. The wildfires have caused widespread devastation, leading to evacuations and tragic loss of life. According to a report by The Sun, the Academy Awards may be canceled as the city grapples with the ongoing crisis.

Will the Oscars 2025 Be Canceled?

An insider revealed, “The Academy’s priority right now is to avoid appearing celebratory while many in Los Angeles are enduring heartbreak and immense loss. Even if the fires subside soon, the city’s recovery will take months, and the focus must shift to supporting those affected.” As a result, the Academy is considering pivoting to fundraising and relief efforts when appropriate.

Contingency Plans in Place

While previous challenges, such as the 2021 pandemic lockdown, only resulted in postponements, the severity of the wildfires has forced the Academy to activate a “contingency strategy” to potentially cancel the event entirely. The last time such measures were seriously considered was following the 9/11 attacks. High-profile stars, including Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, and Steven Spielberg, are closely monitoring the situation as the Academy evaluates its options.

Goody Bags Scrapped Amid Criticism

Even if the ceremony proceeds, the luxurious £140,000 ($171,000) gift bags traditionally given to attendees will be eliminated. Previous bags included extravagant items like a three-night Swiss Alps getaway, luxury beauty treatments, and high-end jewelry. However, these perks have been deemed inappropriate in light of the crisis.

Adjustments to the Oscars Schedule

The Academy has already extended the nomination voting period to January 17, with the nominees set to be announced virtually on January 23. The wildfires have had a significant impact on Hollywood’s elite, destroying the homes of celebrities such as Mandy Moore and Paris Hilton. So far, 25 lives have been lost, with officials warning that the death toll could rise as emergency crews continue their search efforts.

The decision to proceed with or cancel the Oscars 2025 will likely reflect the Academy’s commitment to supporting a city in mourning.
