One Wrong Picture, A Thousand Angry Comments — Athiya Shetty’s Tribute Goof-Up Goes Viral

When India lost legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle at the age of 92, the entire entertainment industry rushed to pay tribute. Most did it with grace. Athiya Shetty, however, accidentally set the internet on fire — for entirely the wrong reason.

What Exactly Happened with Athiya Shetty?

While mourning the irreparable loss of Asha Bhosle, Athiya Shetty mistakenly posted a black-and-white picture of Lata Mangeshkar on her Instagram story as a tribute. Two of the most iconic voices in Indian music history — and Athiya confused one for the other, publicly, on the very day of Asha ji’s passing.

Though she deleted the Instagram story soon after realising her mistake, screenshots went viral on the internet in no time, with reactions ranging from criticism to outright trolling.

How Did the Internet React?

Social media did not go easy on the actress. A user on X wrote that posting the wrong photo “shows a lack of attention” and added that the least one can do is verify before posting, especially during such sensitive moments. Others were more blunt — questioning how someone raised within the film industry could mix up two of India’s most celebrated singing legends.

Athiya Shetty did not issue a public apology. Instead, she quietly reposted a fresh story with the correct photo of Asha Bhosle and offered her condolences.

It’s the kind of social media moment that’s easy to make — but very hard to live down, especially when the world is watching and grieving together.

A Mistake, But Also a Mirror

This isn’t just about one wrong post. It’s a reminder of something deeper — in the age of quick tributes and reactive social media, even well-meaning gestures can become tone-deaf when basic care is missing. Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, two sisters who between them gave India thousands of unforgettable songs, deserve to be remembered correctly.

Both were titans. Both had distinct faces, voices, and legacies. Mixing them up — especially on a day of national mourning — felt to many like a symptom of a larger disconnect between this generation of star kids and the cultural giants who built the industry they inhabit.
