OMG 2 Origin Story Gets Messy: Producer Ashwin Varde Fires Back at Paresh Rawal

A quiet office friendship in Bandra. A casually shared story idea. A rights dispute years later playing out in public. That’s the arc producer Ashwin Varde laid out while responding to Paresh Rawal’s recent claims about who really created OMG 2.

What Did Paresh Rawal Claim?

Rawal recently stated in a podcast that the story of OMG 2 was originally his idea, developed together with director Amit Rai, and that he was never credited for it.

How Did Ashwin Varde Respond?

Speaking exclusively to Pinkvilla, producer Ashwin Varde called the accusations shocking and unsubstantiated, saying he felt compelled to share his own account of how the film actually came together. According to Varde, the OMG 2 subject came from a casual conversation with Amit Rai, who had written it closely resembling the original OMG format at Rawal’s request — but crucially, Rai retained sole authorship of the script.

Did Rawal Get Any Credit or Payment?

Varde stated that Rawal was still credited as a producer on OMG 2, despite what Varde described as zero creative contribution, with those production credits passed to Rawal’s wife and business partner. Varde also said Rawal received an agreed payment for the film — a detail he says Rawal left out of his own account.

This kind of dispute isn’t unusual in the film industry, where story ownership and screen credit often hinge on formal intellectual property registration rather than informal conversations between collaborators.
