Gary Oldman Says It’s a “Struggle & Fight” To Ensure ‘Slow

Gary Oldman says keeping Slow Horses on a tight release calendar is a “struggle & fight,” revealing production challenges in August 2026. The Apple TV+ espionage series, adapted from Mick Herron’s spy novels, has built a loyal following across four seasons since its 2024 debut.

Oldman, who plays the dishevelled MI5 agent Jackson Lamb, described the effort to avoid years-long gaps between seasons as a constant battle. The show’s fourth season premiered on September 4, 2024, yet fans are still waiting for clarity on the next chapter.

Oldman Says: Why the Timeline Is a Constant Struggle

The actor’s comments came during a press push in August 2026, where he framed the production pipeline as a delicate balancing act.

“It’s a struggle & fight to ensure we don’t have those gaps,” Oldman said, per reports from the event. “Everyone wants to get back to Jackson Lamb, but the logistics don’t always cooperate.” See-Saw Films produces the series for Apple TV+, and the show’s ensemble cast adds scheduling complexity.

Jack Lowden, who plays agent River Cartwright alongside Oldman, has a busy film slate that complicates block shooting. Coordinating actors, locations, and post-production within a single year is no small feat. The fourth season wrapped in October 2024, and the fifth season was greenlit well before that.

Yet the gap between seasons three and four stretched to nearly two years, a pattern Oldman clearly wants to break.

Context: A Franchise Built on Momentum

Slow Horses has become one of Apple TV+’s most dependable originals, earning critical acclaim for its dry wit and tense set pieces. Herron’s book series provides a steady source of material, with the show adapting roughly one novel per season. That pipeline gives the writers a clear roadmap, but production realities often slow things down.

The show’s release strategy matters too. Apple TV+ has leaned on Slow Horses as a cornerstone of its drama slate, and long waits risk losing casual viewers. Oldman’s comments signal that the studio hears that concern. He noted that the fight is worth it because the material demands care, not just speed. There’s also the question of the actor’s own commitments. Oldman has balanced film roles and awards campaigns alongside the series, and his schedule shapes the shoot window. When a lead actor’s availability narrows, the entire calendar shifts. For more detail, see ArXiv AI.

What’s Next for Season 5

Season five is confirmed, and production reports suggest filming has been underway through 2026. The expectation, based on Oldman’s remarks, is that the gap between seasons four and five will be shorter than previous waits. Apple TV+ has not announced an official premiere date as of August 2026. The strategy is expected to combine theatrical windows with streaming backing, though no concrete dates have been locked.

Fans tracking the show’s trajectory should watch for a formal release announcement in the coming months. Oldman’s candor suggests the creative team is pushing hard for a faster turnaround. That push matters commercially. A tighter release rhythm keeps Slow Horses in cultural conversation, and that translates to subscriber retention for Apple TV+. The show’s blend of star power and source material gives it staying power, but momentum is fragile. The bottom line: Oldman says the fight is real, but the resolve is stronger.
