It came agonizingly close. Obsession, the psychological horror thriller starring Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette, has officially closed out its theatrical run in India — falling just short of the coveted Rs. 100 crore club by a razor-thin margin.
Obsession: Overview
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Film | Obsession |
| Lead Cast | Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette |
| Director | Curry Barker |
| Genre | Psychological Horror Thriller |
| Final India Gross | Rs. 99.25 crore |
| Ranking | 2nd highest-grossing Hollywood horror film in India |
| Ahead of It | The Conjuring: Last Rites (Rs. 100.50 crore) |
So Close, Yet So Far
Obsession finished its entire Indian theatrical run at Rs. 99.25 crore gross, narrowly missing the historic Rs. 100 crore benchmark. The film was on track to not only enter the century club but also become the highest-grossing Hollywood horror film ever in India — until an OTT premiere arrived mid-run, causing a noticeable dip in subsequent theatrical collections.
As things stand, Obsession now holds the title of the second highest-grossing Hollywood horror film of all time at the Indian box office, trailing only The Conjuring: Last Rites, which finished its own run at Rs. 100.50 crore gross.
Week-by-Week Breakdown
| Week | Collection |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Rs. 21.85 crore |
| Week 2 | Rs. 37.00 crore |
| Week 3 | Rs. 25.50 crore |
| Week 4 | Rs. 9.25 crore |
| Week 5 | Rs. 3.50 crore |
| Week 6 | Rs. 1.50 crore |
| Week 7 | Rs. 0.40 crore |
| Week 8 | Rs. 0.15 crore |
| Total | Rs. 99.25 crore |
The film’s strongest stretch came in its first four weeks, where it pulled in around Rs. 93.60 crore combined, with Week 2 alone contributing a massive Rs. 37 crore — clearly the film’s commercial peak before the OTT release began chipping away at theatrical demand.
A Blockbuster Without the Brand Name
What makes this run particularly impressive is the fact that Obsession had no existing IP or franchise recognition backing it. As a standalone horror film working with a relatively modest budget, its performance stands out as a genuine word-of-mouth success story rather than a franchise-driven guarantee.
Director Curry Barker’s psychological horror thriller proves that strong buzz and genre appeal can still carry a film to blockbuster territory in India, even without a built-in fanbase.
Why This Matters for Hollywood Horror in India
Landing as the second-highest grossing Hollywood horror release ever in the Indian market signals healthy, growing appetite for the genre among Indian audiences — a trend studios and distributors will likely watch closely for future horror releases.
