The Story

Facing expulsion from their college, two friends get a shot at redemption if they can take five children from poverty and enroll them in school. Relentless do-gooder Molshri runs a street theatre group at her college in Dhanbad. Closeted gay student Shivang joins Molshri’s group and is swept away by her zeal for social causes. When the besties are caught committing a crime to help the impoverished canteen employee Mukund, they are expelled.

The kindly college principal tells Shivang and Molshri that they will be reinstated if they can enrol five children from Mukund’s slum at a school. What starts as punishment slowly turns into a reality check about inequality, education, and empathy. As they try to change others’ lives, they end up being changed themselves.

The Remarkable Journey to Netflix

Filmmakers Tanmaya Shekhar and Molshri have covered the journey from “nukkad to Netflix.” Their film Nukkad Naatak, which once struggled to secure theatrical screens, is now streaming on Netflix starting April 24. The film, which tackles themes like access to education in slum communities and LGBTQ+ rights, was released across 100 screens in India on February 27. Its theatrical run was modest, earning around Rs 0.19 crore net. Made on a tight budget of Rs 2.5 crore, the project depended heavily on grassroots promotion, including a unique caravan campaign. 

Taking their campaign to the ground, they hand-painted a caravan with the film’s title and embarked on a cross-country trip, from Mumbai to Kolkata, covering 15 cities in six weeks. Along the way, Shekhar and Molshri engaged with people in schools, colleges, NGOs, and even on street corners, echoing the very spirit of a typical street play.

“We are more confident that no matter what challenges we face, we will find our way. After all, Nukkad se Netflix tak bhi toh rasta bana hi liya na (After all, we did find a way from a street corner to Netflix),” Shekhar said.

Critical Reception

The 107-minute movie is so well-intentioned and sincere that it seems churlish to pick out its flaws. The plot is very much like a street play in its examination of and solutions to the structural causes of poverty. An indie film with sold out theatrical shows is a rare sight and a triumph to say the least. Nukkad Naatak follows two IT college students Molshri and Shivang who are a part of Abhay, a college theatre group headed by Molshri herself.
