NTT DATA, a global business and technology services provider, and Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Inc. (HYMH) have announced the deployment of a physical AI solution aimed at enhancing quality assurance within manufacturing processes. The system, now operational at HYMH’s Berea, Kentucky facility, integrates real-time data to monitor assembly operations and identify production deviations.
The initiative introduces AI-driven quality assurance directly into HYMH’s manufacturing workflows. This approach utilizes sensor data to enable machinery and systems to perceive, interpret, and react in real-time within operational environments. It represents an application of physical AI in an industrial assembly setting, embedding intelligence to ensure product consistency and adherence to quality standards.

NTT DATA- Solution Architecture and Benefits
The solution, developed by NTT DATA (https://www.nttdata.com/global/en/) in collaboration with Archetype AI, integrates vision sensors, edge AI for on-site data processing, and advanced analytics into critical assembly workflows. It analyzes assembly activity against expected production steps, validating component installation and completion of assembly stages. The system flags any deviations before the product moves to subsequent production stages, enabling early identification and resolution of potential issues.

According to NTT DATA, this method has reduced AI deployment timelines from months to weeks compared to conventional techniques, accelerating adoption and iterative improvements across manufacturing operations. The localized processing enabled by edge computing also contributes to faster rollout and value realization.
Barbara Binda, Director of Global Manufacturing Innovation at Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, commented, “Our confidence in physical AI continues to grow, and we’re observing the benefits AI can bring to our global manufacturing operations. Working with NTT DATA helps our production teams maintain high-quality standards and deliver reliable products.”
Shahid Ahmed, Global Head of Edge Services at NTT DATA, Inc., stated, “This deployment illustrates the practical application of physical AI in real production environments, demonstrating tangible impact on the factory floor. By combining production data with physical AI models at the edge, we are assisting manufacturers like HYMH in delivering high-quality products and supporting frontline workers.”
The deployment highlights a shift in how AI is applied within industrial manufacturing, particularly as demand rises for advanced manufacturing technologies that can operate effectively in complex environments. This development aligns with broader industry developments in AI (https://technosports.co.in/) and automation, focusing on improving efficiency, quality, and operational resilience.
This current deployment builds upon an existing collaboration between NTT DATA and HYMH, as both entities continue to explore the scalability of physical AI to achieve consistent and high-quality production outcomes.
