NRIs Can Now Use UPI in India With Foreign Mobile Numbers

Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) no longer need Indian SIM cards to use UPI payments in India. Thanks to recent updates from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and private banks like IDFC First, NRIs can now make digital payments using their international mobile numbers.

NRIs Can Now Use UPI in India With Foreign Mobile Numbers

In January 2023, the RBI allowed UPI access for NRIs holding NRE (Non-Resident External) or NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) accounts linked to international mobile numbers. This game-changing policy enables NRIs to pay rent, send money to family, or settle bills in India using apps like Google Pay and PhonePe.

Eligibility Requirements

To activate UPI as an NRI, you must:

• Hold an NRE or NRO account with an Indian bank
• Use a mobile number with an approved country code
• Ensure your bank and UPI app support international number onboarding

Supported Countries & Setup Process

As of now, NRIs from 12 countries including the USA, UK, UAE, Australia, and Singapore can link their accounts to UPI apps using their foreign mobile numbers.

How to Set Up UPI

1. Open an NRE or NRO account with a UPI-enabled Indian bank
2. Register your international mobile number with the bank
3. Download supported UPI apps (PhonePe, Google Pay India, BHIM, or Paytm)
4. Complete UPI registration using your international number
5. Start transacting in India

Tax Considerations

Understanding tax implications is crucial for NRIs using UPI. NRE accounts are tax-free, but NRO accounts are taxable in India. PAN linking is essential to avoid higher tax deductions under Section 206AA.
