Most Used UPI App in India: India’s digital payments landscape continues to be a two-horse race, with PhonePe and Google Pay together commanding nearly 80% of all UPI transaction volume, according to the latest data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

Most Used UPI App: UPI Market Share Breakdown

AppTransaction Volume Share
PhonePe45.9%
Google Pay32.4%
Paytm8.1%
Navi4.4%
Super.Money1.7%
BHIM1.0%
Others6.4%

PhonePe Leads the Pack

With a commanding 45.9% share, PhonePe remains India’s most-used UPI app by a significant margin, reflecting its deep penetration across both urban and semi-urban markets since its early aggressive expansion strategy.

Google Pay Holds Strong Second Position

Google Pay follows closely with 32.4% of transaction volume, benefiting from its seamless integration with the Android ecosystem and widespread trust among users for everyday payments.

The Duopoly Effect

Combined, PhonePe and Google Pay account for 78.3% of all UPI transactions in India — a striking concentration that has repeatedly drawn scrutiny from regulators concerned about over-reliance on just two private players in a system as critical as national digital payments infrastructure.

Where Does This Leave the Rest?

Paytm, once a pioneer of India’s UPI revolution, has slipped to a distant third at 8.1%, while newer entrants like Navi and Super.Money are steadily carving out niche shares. BHIM, the NPCI’s own app, continues to lag behind despite being the original UPI interface.

Most Used UPI App in India: Why This Matters

As UPI transaction volumes continue to surge nationwide, this concentration raises important questions about market diversity, systemic risk, and whether NPCI’s market-cap guidelines will eventually reshape this landscape.
