Not Retired, Just Choosy: Why Arijit Singh Said Yes to Amaal Mallik for Awarapan 2

Arijit Singh walking away from playback singing broke a thousand hearts. But Amaal Mallik just revealed the real story behind convincing India’s biggest voice to sing one more time — and it’s less “comeback” and more “he simply liked the song.”

In an exclusive chat with Pinkvilla, Mallik cleared the air on how Arijit ended up lending his voice to Awarapan 2, and honestly, the story is more heartfelt than any PR spin could’ve made it.

Awarapan 2: Overview

No Pressure, No Old Deal — Just a Song That Clicked

Mallik was clear: nobody forced Arijit into anything. His decision to step back from film music was entirely his own, something close collaborators sensed coming a year or two before he made it public. What people are calling a “comeback,” Mallik insists, is simply Arijit choosing a song he genuinely connected with.

He also didn’t hold back on how the industry treats big names like a magic formula — “pay whatever, get Arijit to sing it” — while pointing out that even Arijit himself has realized a big name alone can’t save a mediocre song anymore.

The Real Backstory

For nearly a year, “Yeh Awarapan” only existed in Mallik’s own scratch vocals. The duo regularly exchanges music, and Mallik sent several tracks his way until this one stuck. Arijit even resisted at first, joking that Mallik’s own version was good enough — but eventually recorded it with real heart just months before release.

Mallik’s take is refreshingly simple: Arijit Singh is an Indian playback singer, and stepping away from film music doesn’t mean stepping away from music altogether. If a song moves him, he’ll sing it — obituary narratives aside.
