Health authorities in West Bengal are on high alert following the detection of two suspected Nipah virus infections in the state. The cases, both involving healthcare workers, were identified at the Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) at AIIMS Kalyani, triggering an immediate and coordinated response from both the state and central governments.

The two individuals are employees—a male and a female nurse—at a private hospital in Barasat, North 24 Parganas, and are currently in a very critical condition, requiring ventilator support.

Nipah Virus: Swift Action and High-Risk Contact Tracing Initiated

In response to the severe nature of the zoonotic disease, state officials have moved swiftly to contain any potential spread. West Bengal Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty convened an emergency meeting and confirmed that the state’s health department has launched meticulous contact tracing efforts.

Surveillance has been significantly intensified across three key districts where the patients had recent travel history or worked:

  • North 24 Parganas (Barasat)
  • Purba Bardhaman
  • Nadia (Ghugragachi area)

Preliminary investigations indicate the patients had traveled to their homes in East Midnapore and East Burdwan in December before falling ill. The state government has also released two helpline numbers to assist citizens and encourage self-reporting of high-risk contacts: 033 2333-0180 and 9874708858.

Centre Deploys National Outbreak Response Team

The Union Health Ministry has stepped in, assuring the West Bengal government of comprehensive technical, logistical, and operational support. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda reached out to the state’s Chief Minister, underscoring the necessity for robust Centre-State coordination.

A National Joint Outbreak Response Team, comprising specialists from institutions like the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune, the National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) in Chennai, and AIIMS Kalyani, has been immediately deployed. Furthermore, the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) at the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in Delhi has been activated to coordinate the national response to the threat.

What is the Nipah Virus (NiV)?

Nipah virus is a serious zoonotic illness, meaning it is transmitted from animals to humans. Fruit bats, which are the natural reservoir for the virus, and pigs are primary vectors. Human infection can occur through contact with an infected animal’s bodily fluids, consumption of contaminated food—such as raw date palm sap—or through human-to-human transmission.

NiV is a grave concern due to its extremely high case fatality rate, which has historically been reported as high as 70% in past outbreaks, and even 100% in West Bengal’s 2007 event.

Symptoms and Treatment

The infection typically begins with non-specific, flu-like symptoms, making early diagnosis challenging.

Common symptoms include:

  • Fever and headache
  • Sore throat and cough
  • Vomiting
  • Difficulty in breathing

In severe cases, the illness can rapidly progress to acute respiratory distress and encephalitis, which is the inflammation of the brain, leading to disorientation, seizures, and potentially coma or death. Currently, there is no licensed vaccine or specific antiviral cure for the Nipah virus. Treatment is limited to intensive supportive care, including the use of an experimental monoclonal antibody in severe cases, if administered early.

West Bengal has a history of Nipah outbreaks, having previously seen cases in 2001 and 2007. Experts are now urging residents, especially in affected areas, to avoid consuming raw date palm sap, a known risk factor, and to maintain strict hygiene practices while the investigation into the source of the current infections continues.
