The Story
Barbara Ostrzeńska is a proud but impoverished noblewoman living in a Poland that has long been absent from the map of Europe. When she learns that her great love is marrying someone else, she decides to avoid spinsterhood and marries Bogumił Niechcic, a modest former insurgent and property manager.
Their personalities clash. His work gives him peace and fulfillment, while she’s restless. Over the thirty years shown on screen, they build a life in the countryside, but Barbara’s longing for passion and her lost status keep colliding with everyday reality.
Why This Adaptation Feels Fresh?
Director Kamila Tarabura describes her take as an honest, emotional look at the myth of romantic love and the battle between expectations and reality. She also sees it as a story about how a long-term relationship is work that can bear fruit across a lifetime, and about sacrifice, abandoned dreams and the search for happiness.
Netflix’s Łukasz Kłuskiewicz calls the story a timeless reflection on ordinary human dilemmas, told through the contemporary sensitivity of young creators.
Who’s in the Cast?
Tomasz Schuchardt plays Bogumił. He’s one of Netflix’s most frequently featured Polish actors, with credits including High Water, Divorce, Operation Hyacinth, Delivery by Christmas and The Doll.
Jaśmina Polak plays Barbara. Her Netflix credits include Dead End and Hounds Hill, and she’s also known for The Thaw. No other cast members have been announced yet.
When Will It Release?
