Ever hosted a get-together that went sideways? Now imagine a violent storm, a houseful of wealthy old friends and a generous helping of strange mushrooms. That’s The Storm (Stormen), the new Swedish dark comedy on Netflix, and What’s on Netflix calls it the most bonkers Netflix release of 2026.

What’s The Storm About?

Filip (Gustaf Skarsgård) and Caroline (Aliette Opheim) run a bed and breakfast on a remote Swedish estate, and money is leaving faster than it’s arriving. When Filip turns 45, Caroline sees a chance. They invite rich college friends over, hoping one of them will open their wallet.

Then a storm traps everyone indoors, and the mushrooms do the rest. Old grudges resurface, secrets spill out and the cozy reunion becomes a spectacular disaster.

The Verdict in Brief

What works: Reviewer Carlo van Remortel says Skarsgård convincingly plays a man losing his grip, and Opheim is equally strong. Their growing tension provides some of the film’s best moments. He also credits the filmmakers for never hitting the brakes, so boredom is rarely a problem.

What doesn’t: The review finds the mix of genres messy, and the absurdity increasingly forced. Louder and crazier doesn’t automatically mean funnier, he says. Underneath, there’s an interesting story about friendship, keeping up appearances and years of bottled-up resentment, but it keeps getting buried by yet another bizarre event.

Should You Watch It?

If you enjoy chaotic, offbeat humor and want to see Skarsgård far from his Vikings role as Floki, give it a go. If you prefer tighter, more grounded storytelling, you may find it exhausting. The reviewer also suggests this brand of Swedish humor may not land equally well with every international audience.
