NFL Goes Global in 2026 — Nine International Games, Four Continents, and a Record That Changes Everything

American football is no longer just America’s game. The NFL just made its biggest global bet yet — and the 2026 season is the proof.

At this week’s spring owners meeting, the NFL approved a landmark rule change increasing the maximum number of league-run international games from 8 to 10, effective from the 2027 season. This isn’t a minor tweak — it’s a structural shift in how Commissioner Roger Goodell envisions the NFL’s future, with an ultimate goal of staging up to 16 international games per year.

For 2026, the league is already breaking records with nine games set to be played outside the United States — the most in a single season ever.

A Truly Global League — Four Continents in One Season

What makes 2026 genuinely historic is the geographic spread. The NFL — the world’s most valuable sports league — is now planting its flag across North America, South America, Europe, and Oceania in a single campaign. Australia marks a first-ever regular season appearance in the Southern Hemisphere. France gets its debut. Brazil gets its third game ever. Spain hosts only its second.

The Jacksonville Jaguars remain the league’s most committed international ambassadors, continuing their long-standing multi-game arrangement in the United Kingdom that operates under a separate agreement from the league-run games.

NFL EVP Peter O’Reilly has signalled that Asia — with Japan as the primary target — is next on the expansion roadmap, suggesting that “international” is fast becoming a core pillar of the NFL calendar rather than a novelty addition.

Including the Jaguars’ UK home games, the total number of games played outside the US could reach 11 as early as 2027, pending agreements with the NFL Players Association.
