Newcastle United is in advanced talks to bring Leanne Kiernan, a forward currently playing for Liverpool, on board. The 27-year-old Irish international looks set to leave Anfield as Newcastle works on boosting its attack for the upcoming season.
Kiernan spent the latter half of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, gaining some crucial playing time. Even though she was on loan, she still has at least a year left on her contract with Liverpool. This means Newcastle will likely need to pay a transfer fee to make the deal happen. This adds an interesting twist to the negotiations, as the financial side could affect both clubs.
Key Details on Kiernan’s Career
Leanne Kiernan has been a key player for Liverpool since joining the club five years ago. Throughout her time there, she has made 76 appearances and scored 23 goals.
She notably became Liverpool’s top scorer in the 2021-22 season, netting 14 goals to help the team clinch the WSL 2 title. Before Liverpool, she made over 40 appearances for West Ham in the Women’s Super League and had a strong start to her career at Shelbourne.
| Statistic | Value |

| Total Appearances at Liverpool | 76 |
| Goals Scored at Liverpool | 23 |
| Top Scorer Season | 2021-22 (14 goals) |
| Total International Caps | 38 (Republic of Ireland) |
According to the BBC, Kiernan has struggled to get regular playing time under Liverpool’s management, starting just once in the Women’s Super League before her loan to Nottingham Forest. A move to Newcastle could give her the chance for more consistent playing time.
Context of the Transfer
Newcastle United currently plays in the second tier of women’s football and is eager to enhance its squad for the upcoming season. Signing Kiernan would definitely add depth to their attacking lineup, which has already welcomed six new players during this transfer window. As they gear up to compete for the WSL 2 title, bringing in someone like Kiernan could significantly improve their chances.
Meanwhile, Liverpool has also been active in the transfer market, recently signing German forward Vivien Endemann from Wolfsburg. This influx of talent could limit Kiernan’s opportunities at Liverpool, making her potential transfer to Newcastle even more appealing.
What’s Next for Kiernan and Newcastle?
Negotiations between Newcastle and Liverpool are still underway, and while there’s no official word yet, a transfer fee is expected to be finalized soon. If everything goes through, Kiernan’s signing would not only strengthen Newcastle’s squad but also give her a fresh start in a competitive environment where she can really shine.
For Newcastle, bringing in Kiernan could mark an important step in their quest for success in the upcoming season. The club aims to position itself as a serious contender in the league, and adding experienced players is key to reaching that goal.
Leanne Kiernan’s potential move to Newcastle United is shaping up to be a significant moment in women’s football. As both clubs work through this transfer, everyone will be keeping an eye on the final agreement and how it impacts their respective seasons.
