If there’s one Netflix film that has Korean cinema fans already losing their minds, it’s this one. A power-packed cast, a director with serious credentials, and a story ripped straight from the most turbulent chapters of modern Korean history — The Generals is shaping up to be unmissable.

What Is The Generals About?

Directed by Yoon Jong Bin — the man behind Narco-Saints and Nine Puzzles — The Generals tells the story of Roh Tae Woo, the second-in-command who stood beside absolute ruler Chun Doo Hwan, wearing the mask of an “ordinary person” while quietly striving for greater power.

Known for portraying people struggling to survive in worlds shaped by rigid hierarchies and class systems, director Yoon Jong Bin will once again explore the raw faces of his characters and their survival strategies against the backdrop of modern Korean history.

For deeper context, the real-life Chun Doo Hwan military regime is well documented on Wikipedia — and it’s as gripping as any thriller.

The Generals: Full Cast Breakdown

Actor	Character	Role
Son Suk Ku	Roh Tae Woo	Longtime No. 2 rising to power
Ha Jung Woo	Chun Doo Hwan	The absolute ruler at the center
Ji Chang Wook	Heo Hak Seong	A junior who becomes a thorn in Roh’s side
Hyun Bong Sik	Jung Ho Joong	Classmate & friend of both leads
Seo Hyun Woo	Park Cheol Woong	Public security prosecutor & Roh’s aide

Why This Cast Is a Big Deal

Son Suk Ku is set to portray the complex and subtle inner life of Roh Tae Woo — long remembered only as Chun Doo Hwan’s friend and a perpetual No. 2 — as he finally rises to the position he has long sought.

Anticipation is building for the pairing of Son Suk Ku and Ha Jung Woo, who will depict a close friendship formed as classmates at the Korea Military Academy, along with the complex relationship between a No. 1 and a No. 2.

Ji Chang Wook adds sharp tension to the story as Heo Hak Seong, a junior whom Roh Tae Woo sees as a thorn in his side. soompi Frankly, that three-way dynamic alone is worth the watch.
