Netflix Quietly Canceled Redwall Adaptations After 5 Years: What Happened to the Ambitious Project?

The streaming wars just got another casualty. Netflix has officially scrapped its highly anticipated Redwall movie and TV adaptations, marking a devastating blow to fans who’ve been waiting since the 2021 announcement. After five years of development and completed scripts, the beloved Brian Jacques fantasy series won’t grace Netflix screens. Here’s everything you need to know about this shock cancellation.

When Dreams Meet Reality: The Rise and Fall of Redwall at Netflix

Back in February 2021, Netflix made major headlines. The streaming giant acquired the exclusive adaptation rights to all 22 books in the iconic Redwall series—a historic first. The deal with Penguin Random House promised an animated cinematic universe featuring beloved characters like Matthias, Martin the Warrior, and Log-a-Log. Fans celebrated. Production teams mobilized. Patrick McHale, the creator of the critically acclaimed Over the Garden Wall, was tapped to write the feature film adaptation. Then, silence fell.

The Creative Team Exodus

Patrick McHale, despite completing a finished script for the feature film based on the original Redwall novel, left the project by late 2022. While concept art from artist Bert Youn emerged online in June 2025—showcasing stunning visual interpretations of Redwall’s mouse kingdoms—momentum had already evaporated.

Simultaneously, Netflix’s planned Martin the Warrior limited event series, focusing on the legendary co-founder of Redwall Abbey, suffered the same fate. No official explanation. No dramatic announcements. Just quiet dissolution.

Netflix’s Comment (Or Lack Thereof)

When Broadcast Now published their exposé in 2026, Netflix declined to comment on the cancellation. The company held adaptation options on all 22 Jacques novels through 2025 but simply chose not to renew. According to industry sources, “as is often the case with these big sweeping fantasy projects, there are good intentions from the off, but sometimes things linger, and other priorities come in.”

Translation: Netflix moved on to shinier projects.

Why Redwall Mattered: Understanding the Fandom’s Heartbreak

Brian Jacques’ Redwall series isn’t just another book franchise. Since the first novel’s 1986 publication, millions of readers—primarily children and young adults—have journeyed through Mossflower Wood, bonded with anthropomorphic animal characters, and devoured elaborate feast descriptions that rival Game of Thrones for food envy.

The books’ perennial popularity meant this wasn’t a passion project for Netflix’s hipster niche audience. This was mainstream fantasy gold waiting to happen.

The Bigger Picture: Netflix’s Children’s Literature Strategy Crumbling

Redwall’s cancellation fits a troubling pattern in Netflix’s literary adaptation ambitions:

Successful Projects:

• The Chronicles of Narnia live-action film (finally arriving December 2026 under Greta Gerwig’s direction)
• Roald Dahl Story Company adaptations (Matilda musical, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical in development)

Failed Projects:

• Redwall (all projects scrapped)
• Asterix animated series (struggling)

Netflix’s grand strategy—announced simultaneously in 2018-2021—was to lock down every iconic children’s property possible. The execution, however, proved less stellar than the ambition.

What’s Next for Redwall Fans?

With rights now available, speculation swirls about potential new homes for the franchise. Amazon Prime Video, known for investing in fantasy adaptations, could be a logical fit. Apple+ and Disney+ are also possibilities. The completed script and concept art prove Netflix’s vision wasn’t creatively bankrupt—just strategically abandoned.

For now, fans must return to the books themselves. And honestly? After five years of false hope, diving back into Redwall novels might be more satisfying than waiting for another streaming service’s adaptation promises.
