Twenty-two years later, the magic wishing dust is back. Netflix has officially confirmed a reimagined version of the beloved 13 Going on 30, the 2004 rom-com classic that made Jennifer Garner a household name and gave us one of the most iconic “Thriller” dance sequences in cinema history. Only this time, it’s getting a modern makeover — with a brand-new cast, an updated story, and Garner herself stepping behind the scenes as executive producer.

What’s the New Story?

The core wish-fulfilment premise remains intact — a 13-year-old girl desperately wanting to fast-forward to adulthood — but the script has been meaningfully updated for 2026 audiences. In a notable departure from the original, this version of Jenna is being raised by two dads, adding a fresh and inclusive dimension to her coming-of-age story. Specific details about how the romance unfolds are still under wraps, but the spirit of the original is clearly intact.

Why This Cast Is Worth Getting Excited About

Emily Bader, who broke out in Prime Video’s My Lady Jane, is one of the most in-demand young actresses right now. She’s also set to play soccer legend Mia Hamm in Netflix’s upcoming The 99’ers, so this project solidifies her as a genuine Netflix leading woman. Logan Lerman (Only Murders in the Building, Oh, Hi!) brings charm and emotional range as the romantic lead — and the two already have on-screen chemistry from working together in People We Meet on Vacation.

Director Brett Haley, who helmed People We Meet on Vacation, returns for his third collaboration with Bader. His previous Netflix work — All the Bright Places and All Together Now — shows he understands how to balance heartfelt emotion with genuine wit, which is exactly what this reboot needs.

Garner’s involvement as executive producer is the cherry on top. As she said through the announcement, having the original lead back in a creative capacity gives this project a real sense of continuity and respect for what made the first film so special.
