When Netflix launched its original programming era, it followed the prestige TV playbook — think 13-episode seasons for shows like Orange is the New Black and the Marvel Defenders lineup. That standard defined the early Netflix binge experience.

But the algorithm changed everything. Viewer completion rates — how many people actually finish a season — became a critical metric for renewal decisions.
