Netflix Deleted Your Favorite Profile Icon? This Free Chrome Extension Brings Back Retired Avatars

There’s a very specific kind of frustration that only long-time Netflix subscribers understand: you log in one day and your beloved profile icon — maybe it was Alucard from Castlevania, or a fan-favourite from Stranger Things Season 1 — is just gone. Replaced by something newer, shinier, and frankly, less you.

If that sounds painfully familiar, we have fantastic news. A brilliant free browser extension has just arrived on the Chrome Web Store, and it’s giving Netflix fans something they’ve been quietly wishing for: their old avatars back.

What Is the “Restore Retired Netflix Profiles” Extension?

Created by a developer known as 3ndCraft on Reddit (linked to BackSlash Robotics), the aptly named “Restore retired Netflix profiles” extension does exactly what it promises. It recovers over 550 legacy profile pictures that Netflix quietly phased out over the years, bringing the total avatar selection to a jaw-dropping 913 icons to choose from.

Netflix regularly rotates its avatar library to promote current Originals — which makes sense from a business standpoint, but leaves fans bereft of characters they’re genuinely attached to. This extension solves that problem in the most satisfying way possible.

Top 100 Retired Netflix Avatars You Can Get Back

The sheer range of characters the extension recovers is what makes it special. Here’s a quick overview of the most beloved franchises and shows whose retired avatars are now restored:

Animation & Anime: Aggretsuko, My Little Pony, Skylanders, Dark Crystal, Disenchantment — classic animated characters fans adored are all back in full force.

Sci-Fi & Fantasy: Love, Death & Robots, The Sandman, Castlevania — some of Netflix’s most visually stunning Originals had incredible avatar art, and now it’s all accessible again.

Cult Favourites: A Series of Unfortunate Events, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Arcane, Heartstopper — shows that built cult followings but eventually got their icon packs retired are fully restored.

Reality & Lifestyle: Queer Eye avatars, which became surprisingly beloved fan selections, are also part of the recovered collection.

Stranger Things Legacy: Avatars from Seasons 1–4 are all back, meaning you can now rock the classic Eleven or Dustin icons that started disappearing as the show progressed.

Altogether, the extension covers characters spanning at least 14 major franchises and dozens of smaller shows, with a total pool of over 550 retired images that effectively triple the personality options on your profile. Think of it as Netflix’s own version of a browser extension — a lightweight tool that meaningfully enhances your experience without touching any core functionality.

How to Get Your Classic Netflix Icon Back in 4 Easy Steps

Getting your retired avatar back is refreshingly simple:

Step 1 — Download the extension from the Chrome Web Store (search “Restore retired Netflix profiles” or find it via the developer’s link).

Step 2 — Add it to your browser. It works seamlessly on Google Chrome and all Chromium-based browsers including Microsoft Edge and Brave.

Step 3 — Log into Netflix via your computer browser and navigate to “Manage Profiles.”

Step 4 — Edit your profile, and the full expanded list of 913 icons will be waiting for you to pick from. Once selected, the avatar syncs across all your devices — TV, phone, tablet — instantly.

That last point is huge. You don’t need to do anything special on your other devices. One selection on your browser and it propagates everywhere.

Note: This is a third-party tool not officially supported by Netflix. Future platform updates could affect functionality, but as of publishing it works flawlessly.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

Profile customization might seem like a small thing, but for subscribers who’ve had Netflix accounts for 5, 8, even 10+ years, that profile icon is a tiny piece of personal identity on the platform. Netflix retiring those icons without warning always felt a little unceremonious. This extension is the community fighting back — and winning.
